Death....

Hi Guys!!!

My signature on this forum has been and is now " Death is lighter than a Feather, Duty is heavier than a Mountain....".

As an entirely philosophical concept, I've never regretted this Haiku. But, I've always wondered how others felt about the concepts it embodies. I've felt the weight of duty since I was 19. Soon I will be 57, with the magical "60" number looming closely over me like some numerical vulture. So, forget the signature for a moment as a mere symbol of bravado on my part! :D :D :D

How indeed do you, personally, view the prospect of DEATH?

I know this might be a heavy discussion, but I'd rather be around for it and hear your personal opinions than miss the discussion--if you know what I mean....! %E %E %E

Hmmmm.

It seems the choice, Statemachine, is between Heaven, Hell, Nothingness or Reincarnation, according to the current Great Religions. Guess which one I prefer--or better yet, tell me which one you prefer..... :D :D :D

Death?

remember my old signature....

"Yes I'm afraid of death, but for a humble secret agent it's a fact of life, like whisky. And I've drunk that all my life."

And I say, Phylo, that if, as I believe, Life is Bulls**t, than Death is even the more B.S.

Of course, there is the theory that our life is actually "Hell" and, in most times, I would adhere to that,

Very Best,
David

...suddenly there was a sharp knock on the door of the Moscow flat.
"Who's there?" called out the old man.
"IT IS I - DEATH," came the answer echoing through the walls
"Oh thank God, I thought it was the KGB!"

By the way Phylo, let's us assume, for the purposes of this discussion that I, as the last Commissar, believe that "Religion is the opiate of the People".

And DEATH assumed the vision of a child, healthy and vigorous, with the outlook of youth, willing to strike down its' elderly for the prospect of progress.

What then did its' victims expect from its' healthy, innocent, expectant and curious face?

What then do you expect, when your time comes, Phylo?

I've learned NOT to expect.

Ride a bike nine hours a day, six days a week and it becomes less something to expect, more something to be relied upon - sooner or later. And it looks like a car door opening into traffic...

As a former bicyclist in Manhattan, I am bound by honesty to agree!

But, what lies beyond that car door is what I would like to anticipate--foolish mortal that I am.........

Why anticipate? You've a 50-50 chance of being disappointed...for a VERY long time!

Would you BET on those odds at the track???

Dear Phylo, I never wage on the track. Gambling is forbidden to me, as I am a 50/50 gambler. Never lost or won more than $20 in a poker game in my life as I tend to be, despite me name, rather the conservative at games of chance. I'm certain that my Grandmother, who ran a Poker table in her home, when times were really bad, would be greatly disappointed at my lack of ambition, but it is what it is.

Now, if existence after DEATH is a game of chance, than I reject it, as I have no faith in chance!

If there is some logic in what occurs after DEATH, than I am required to accept it. Hard choices all around, I fear. So what say you to a possible after-life?

My personal opinion is that there is only silence.

David

Better that than have to endlessly relive that last LOUD screech of locked-up tyres for Eternity....
