Düsseldorf – WWII and beer

Post by Cott Tiger »

Hi Folks,

I will be visiting Düsseldorf with a group of my friends for a lads long weekend in a few weeks time (lucky me  8) )

Firstly, I was wondering if there are any particular WWII points of interest in or near the City that I could visit. I will have most of Saturday free (hangover permitting %E ) to sneak off and do my own thing, so I thought it would be an opportunity to get my WWII anorak on and go exploring!

Secondly, any recommendations for any good eating and drinking establishments would be greatly appreciated. I have spent a lot of time in Cologne before but surprisingly never visited Düsseldorf, despite its proximity. I am eager to try the much revered Alt beer which I believe is brewed in the City and indeed in many of the pubs themselves.

Any recommendations will be warmly welcomed.

Thanks guys,

Andre

In Düsseldorfs pictorial Alstadt have the thursty the pain to chose: around the Bolker and Flingerstreet are baling ca 270 pubs, in this pubs every evening
unbelivable amounts of Altbier (beer) are drunken.

What a funny description of the longest bar of the world.

I found it here http://www.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/18/0,187 ... 14,00.html

Here you can find some brewery, places to eat and art of Düsseldorf.

Hello, hope im not too late,
I live quite close to Düsseldorf, and yes, Altbier is brewed here, be sure to try Füchschen (my personal favorite), Uerige, Schlüssel and Schumacher, those are traditional Beers only brewed in Düsseldorf and they cant be bought in every supermarket (like Frankenheim, Diebels or Schlösser).

Another Düsseldorfer drink is the Killepitsch, a schnaps (which was eventually born during WWII, as the inventor liked to drink in the airraid-shelters. ).

Sadly there isn't much going on here in reference to WWII. I know the
"Mahn- und Gedenkstätte für die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus" , a memorial for the Holocaust, don't know if its good, never been there.

If you're going for local food, i think the pubs in the Altstadt should serve you well (you might try rheinischen Sauerbraten) or you could explore the restaurants at Rheinufer (rhine banks), it's very close to the Altstadt, almost a part of it.

Hi DeBaer,

Many thanks for your tips. You're not too late as I am going this Friday. I am desperately looking forward to trying some of the biers you have recommended, and I will let you how I got on when I get back.

Once again, many thanks for the info, it's appreciated.

All the best,

Andre

Allright then, no problem,
we might see each other (or not, as theres a lot going on on fridays in the Altstadt), as the coming Friday is my first Student-Friday. Don't know what the plans of the other Students are, but maybe we will also have some Altbier in Düsseldorf ;-), i'll look out for a bunch of Englishmen, hehe ;-).

Anyway, have a nice time!

PS: If one of your friends wants to go shopping (don't know, maybe get a present for his wife/girlfriend), there'll be the Königsallee, or Kö, which is well known for its stores, but also very expensive, and the Shadowstraße, a bit less expensive. This, especially the Kö, is also something which would come to a Rheinländers mind if he thinks of something "unique" in Düsseldorf.

Cheers DeBaer, if you see us give us a yell, and I’ll buy you a bier.

Regards,

André

PS: Thanks for the shopping tips. Going back without a present for the wife and kids is more than my life’s worth.
