I notied that both Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski were born in Poland, Oppeln and Gleiwitz respectively. Yet they both play for Germany. Are they/do they consider themselves as Volksdeutsche or are they Polish? Has either ever spoken about this?

Quite common Polish name. It comes from Germanic language group, but it is used quite often in Poland.See also Jadwiga for example.

Why should they ? Milions of Poles live in region of Opole and Gliwice. You think everybody born there is faced with such identity crisis ?
I don't know about Klose, but Podolski underlined several times that Poland is his homeland and that he speaks in Polish with Klose on the field.
