Latest computer problem. Help!

Post by David W »

My computer keeps 'hanging' or refusing to close programs. Anyone got any ideas how to cure this?
I run windows XP.

Thanks.

P.S. Keep answers simple, because so am I!
Thanks. Dave.

Run some virus software Avast is a great free one that can be found if you Google it. The only other thing I could think of is get Spybot and run it to get rid of spyware which is also free and can be found via Google.

Hi David,
1 - Avast Anti virus:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
2 - Spyboot antimalware:
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/en/do ... index.html
3 - Adaware antimalware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Download those 3 (Free) software, install them, update them, disconnect, then run full scan version for the 3 of them. Time consuming, but usefull.
Also make sure that your XP Firewall is set On.
Are your regularly running XP "disk cleanup" and "disk defragmenter"? It may help also. See in "Accessories/System tools".
If you still have problems after all that, well, better check with a computer repair shop.
Good luck

Thank you gentlemen.

I have tried everything you suggested already, with the exception of a defrag & Disc clean. I shall proceed with both, and keep you posted.
Thanks. Dave.

Thanks. Dave.

Boot with a Linux/Knoppix CD, stay away from XP in such a case...

The free Knoppix CDs are already wasting space here, a perfect OS to rescue a wasted XP(whoever this MIST needs...)

The KNOPPIX CDRs are bootable, as most of the LINUX OSs, try it...!

David, did YOU ever try Linux, and for a rescue KNOPPIX, Windows from 3.11 to XP is wasted time.

Try Linux, it needs some time, right now I use SuSE 10.0 besides Win98SE
I have never changed to XP.

Linux scrolls the dirty pornos without "pop-ups"

To be serious at all, I do not "understand" Linux down to the roots, a complex OS, eine Herausforderung...! :D :D :D

Why dont you use windows "retore" function and restore the computer to a previous date when it was working ok??

before you do that just copy any important work or files on to a memory stick , that is files created after the restore point to which you are restoring too.

after that update your virus software

And me too :(
The trouble with the Net is that one can drive properly a car without having any idea about what exactly the noisy dirty stuff under the bonnet consists of, but seemingly can't drive properly a PC without understanding the (Kind) advices provided by Nordwest :(

He is saying in a very hard to understand kind of way that you should remove windows and install a different OS like Linux. Of course that depends on what you use your pc for. If you play any kind of games on it Linux won't fix any problems but if its just for work and such Linux is definitely the way to go.

On my PC I have a 20GB partition for Linux, and a 10GB partition for Win98.
When the system boots, I can choose either Linux or Windows.

Should the whole system crash, I boot from a Knoppix (Linux) CD and check the problems, works fine for me!
