Abwehr Agent Gosta Caroli - SUMMER

Post by tommyjonason »

The first Abwehr agent dropped in Britain by parachute was a Swede, Gosta Caroli, on the night to 6th September 1940, close to Northampton. He was soon arrested and brought to CAMP 020, and recruited to the Double-Cross system under covername SUMMER.

We are doing resaerch on this interesting person.

Are there anyone who have information, in english or german, about him?

Anything in David Kahn's "Hitler's Spies" about him?

Yes.
But that book was written in 1978, long before the MI5 files were opened, so there are a lo0t of mistakes in the book. I have read most of what has been written recently in other books. And there is a file on him in the National Archive.

I am trying to find new things, maybe in Germany, that are news to me.
Newspapers? Archives, Documents, Photos?
He was, by the wa,y probably flown in a blackpainted He 111 from Brussels by the pilot Karl Gartenfeld. Someone probaly know more about that detail, for example.

Hi!

Interesting topic. In the files of the Norwegian Homefront archive at Oslo there is a lot of PWIS reports of german Abwehr/SD personell done by british CIC officers.

The norwegian historian, professor Tore Pryser has written a book about the subject, with also swedish names published in 1994 "Hitlers hemmelige norske agenter". Later he published a book about female german agents from scandinavia.

Try and search this books through google.

Hi!

I think some MI5 files have been transferred to Public Records Office in Kew and this case may now be found there. Look at their websites and downgraded material from the secret organisations.
