Dutchmen in the Kriegsmarine

Post by rednas »

While searching trough some old files I found these pictures. The photo's show some Dutch volunteers for the Kriegsmarine. I often heared that the Dutchmen in the Kriegsmarine didn't used national shield (like the Waffen SS), and that it was a artist impression on the well known propaganda poster. Though this isn't right. The photo's show national shield on the sleeve of the volunteers.

btw, a total of 1500 Dutchmen volunteered for the Kriegsmarine. A great book about them is the biography "Montyn" from D. A. Kooiman which is about the Dutch artist Jan Montyn who sail on a minehunter on the Balticsea and later fought in the Kurland in a Kriegsmarine fielddivision (after that he fought in Korea and (for the red cross) in Vietnam).

I've tried to contact the owner of the photo's though he hasn't send something back.
