Post by Sapper44 » Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:08 pm

Were all cossack units mounted or did some fight as regular infantry?
Thanks;

The cossack armies also had their infantry. These units were dubbed "plastun".

For example, the Kosaken-Kavallerie-Korps formed a Plastun Brigade/Division of two regiments.

Plastun units were also formed by the Kazachij Stan (Kosakenlager).

This topic has recently been discussed at "another history forum", do a forum search for plastun there to find some relevant data.

Cossacks of course had headgear, but then what did these Wehrmacht Cossack infantrymen wear as headgear then?

Always seen them in pictures - as prisoners fater Normandy admittedly -wearing normal "peacutter" forage caps rather than the peaked late war type. I suppose normal stahlheim in combat?
