Decima Mas Attack; Gibralter; August 4th, 1943

Post by 101stDoc »

On August 4th, 1943 there was an attack by DM manned torpedos on three vessels in the Bay of Gibralter. It was a sneak attack (ie limpits).

I have not been able to find a few details that perhaps someone on here can fill out...

Who was the RN officer that escorted Giannoli off the 'Harrison Grey Otis' after he was rescued by a cadet engineer aboard said ship?

What ultimately happened to Giannoli after his capture? So far all I have is that after he was pulled from the water, on the verge of collapse apparently, he declared himself a member of the Italian Navy, was briefly questioned & later was handed over to a Royal Navy officer, who then took him off ship. Then my trail goes empty. I'm guessing he was interrogated & sent to a POW camp, but who knows?

Several hours passed (possibly as much as three) from the time a shore search party (ie divers) was sent for to examine the ship for limpits or other explosives or sabotage. Supposedly, the team was on the way when the mine detonated on the Otis' #3 hold; they apparently witnessed it. Anyone know why it took em so long? I am not all that familiar with the Gibralter garrison & response times. Anyone?

Does anyone know if the 'Standridge' (the Brit ship hit in same attack)?

Dear Sir, it has never been Gibraltar Bay, it is Algeciras (Al-Jazeera) Bay

I have been in Gibraltar and i have seen some monuments dedicated to three sunken vessels, but cannot remember the names..

Hope you can visir Gibraltar because it is a very nice place, there is also a little old cementery where are buried some heroes dead in Trafalgar battle, i liked it very much because the tombstones have curious motifs on them, even there was one of a 17 year sailor killed in Trafalgar
