Montgomery at Caen

Post by Imad »

Hello

I got into an argument with someone on YouTube regarding Goodwood. This person criticized Montgomery as an “inept buffoon” for his conduct in the Caen battles including Goodwood.

I feel that the overall strategy of diverting the bulk of the German armour towards 21st Army Group was the correct one. Not only did it enable a quicker breakout on the American sector, but it made eminent sense to secure Cherbourg to enable supply and reinforcement. The fact that the Germans so thoroughly demolished the port so it was unusable till mid-August wasn’t something anyone could have anticipated. Nevertheless the strategy seems to have been the correct one.

What are everyone’s thoughts?
