Ever since I became interested in military history,(which is as long as I can remember) on Christmas eve I am reminded of the plight of those German soldiers at Stalingrad. In matters of military history it must stand as one of the poignant of all. Within a short few months they had come from being an all conquering army to the reality of being a doomed one. As the excellent Schroter book relates, two hundred and twenty thousand men were to stay in Stalingrad for a few weeks, but they will stay there for all eternity....
I know there were many more souls deserving of our pity on this Christmas across German occupied Europe....
Either way, let us all remember them tonight.....
