Disaster in Namsos 1940.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; a short story...........................

Sinking of the HMS Bittern in Namsos - April 30, 1940.

The sloop HMS Bittern had been bombed from 09:30 hours on 30 April 1940, mostly by Stukas of I./StG 1. In the afternoon the luck of the ship vanished when two planes attacked from the port bow side and a third from astern, therefore splitting the defenses of the ship. The three Ju-87 dropped a single bomb of 250 kg each and Oberleutnant Elmar Schäfer managed to hit on the ship's quarterdeck setting afire a locker with three charges of 8.5 lb of TNT which exploded. The stern was completely blown up and the fire spread to the stern ammo magazine of 4 inches which had to be flooded. The crew was forced to abandon the sloop and she was subsequently sunk by a torpedo of HMS Janus to avoid a hazard to navigation during the evacuation of the troops ..........................
