Battle of Stalingrad - September 1942
I'm researching a relative who I believe fell in the Battle of Stalingrad. The German Volksbund lists the date of his death as 6 September 1942 and the place as 2 km west of Elchi. I can't find Elchi on a map. But I have seen it referenced in German documents in the area of southern Stalingrad near the train station. I would appreciate any information.

Thanks for info! I have found many cases of German place names that don't match what they are called locally. Based on the the date and place of his death, I assume he was in either the 29th ID (motorized) or the 94th ID.

Thanks for that information. Based on the units in the area I assumed 29th or 94th. Given he was from Saxony, that makes sense. What is a good reference for better understanding the action in that time and place?

Part of the photo is being cut off, see the complete one here:
http://www.fireonthevolga.com/94-KIA-9-6-1942-01.jpg
Details? This was a static position from 3.9.42 to 8.9.42 then the 297 ID took over the sector and the "94" was shifted to the west then moved northeasterly for the push into Stalingrad's southern suburbs.

Based on this I would assume he was KIA from artillery fire. Does that make sense?

Thanks - much appreciated. The soldier was Herman Mittag, an NCO (photo below). He was born in Reichenau, Saxony. He is buried in Rossoschka.
