Hedgerows at Teploye?

Post by Rick Cundiff »

A recent update of the battlefield of Teploye from Googleearth is fascinating. The area NE of Teploye has large fields bordered by hedgerow-like boundaries. See for yourself: 52"16'00N 36"00'57E. Were these borders there in 1943? Is this why the Ferdidnands were halted here? I am afraid only veterans of this battle or a long time resident of this area will be able to answer. Are there any out there?

I just tried to hand enter the co-ordinates I just provided and for some reason it goes to an area south of Kursk. Try this instead - enter Molotychi, Russia in the search box. Then go NE about 2.5 miles. This is Teploye. There are several photos of a memorial to the battle here, too. Even one picture of a disabled Ferdinand is there. I really am enjoying this technology.

Now try this - enter Ponyri, Russia in the search box. Go west to the area of enhanced quality. Molotychi will appear at an altitude of 16 miles. Teploye is just to the east of Molotychi. See those hedgerows? It must be determined if they were there in 1943! This is a significant find! Help me confirm or deny their presence!

Rick - I am traveling to Teploye next July for the 70th anniversary of the battle. I will look for your hedgerows and report back to you.

They are not hedgerows in the traditional sense. More accurately, they would be called "narrow forest swathes". I am sure they are only wind breaks, but just need to know when they were planted. Thanx for the post.

I sure hope you are still making this trip to Teploye next month. Good luck in the effort.
