The Führer at home - Melk.

In the small town of Melk on March 12, 1938 a swastika flag was hoisted for the first time at the Tower of the pioneer barracks. Two days later Adolf Hitler drove through Melk, coming from Linz on his way to Vienna.

The inhabitants of the little city were, according to the spirit of that times, by the roadside and cheered. The then NÖ Engineer Battalion No. 3, under the command Oberst Josef Porta reported to the Führer about 13:00 hours with a guard of honor and the officers.

Annexation of Austria - the "Anschluss".

The German invasion of Vorarlberg in Austria showed some peculiarities: Bregenz had been occupied as the first state capital on March 12, after 8:00 clock. The fighting force used there was the IR 14, which was not part of the 8th Army, but of the "Einsatz Österreich", part of the V. Army Corps Stuttgart. On March 12, in Vorarlberg also, the first German soldiers crossed an Austrian border. The enthusiasm of the population of Vorarlberg to the "liberators" was notably lower than in the rest of Austria. Only at 15:00 hours on March 12, 1938 marched the mass of the German soldiers to Bregenz. They were in readiness till then in Lochau. In addition also came three police squadrons (hundreds) into the country, which had to take especially the border surveillance. Only between 15 and 17 March the rest of the region was also occupied.

Military parade in Vienna.

On March 15, 1938 at 14:00 hours an impressive military parade took place, in which German and Austrian troops took part. On the German side, units of the 2. Pz, 27. ID, LAH and Regiment "HG" were involved.......
