Hello to all :D; more follows........................

Arrival of the 27 ID to Vienna.

The first march groups were assembled in the early afternoon on March 12, 1938 around Mühldorf am Inn. An advance squad crossed the border by Braunau at 18:15 hours and it was reported at 20:00 hours in the CP of the VII AK located in Ried and two hours later in the command of the 8 AOK at Wels. There, the officers received orders to march immediately to Vienna and regulate the arrival of the 27 ID as the division should take part of the great military parade to be held on March 15, 1938 which would be presided over by Adolf Hitler in person.

Hello to all :D; the end........................

Arrival of the 27 ID to Vienna.

The transport by rail does not means in any way that the soldiers did not suffer greater stress. The II. Battalion of Infantry Regiment 63, for example, arrived after a day trip in the cars on March 14, 1938 at 20:49 hours at the station of Penzinger. Unloading and landing of material and personnel lasted until 23:30 hours, then the battalion conducted a three hours march in order to reach their accommodation foreseen at Kaiserebersdorf. The III. Battalion of the same regiment arrived at the station of Matzleinsdorfer at 21:30 hours and then marched to its barracks located in Mannswörth.

Hello to all :D; another little history.....................

The 2. / IR 19 in the annexation of Austria.

Recall that the IR 19 belonged to the 7 ID, subordinate to the AK VII on the right wing of the 8 AOK.

There was peace in the huge building complex located north of Munich that night of March 10, 1938. The day's activities had ceased and the stillness enveloped the barracks now. In the silence of the night an alarm suddenly sounded. We quickly put on our uniforms and ran to receive orders. Alarm!

It was not a task as any other. There seemed not to be an exercise but the beginning of something important. Within hours the equipment was ready, the radio transmitter device packed and we were ready to leave ..... but where we would march?. The night was cold and wet, in the courtyard of the barracks could see the beams of the flashlights of the messengers that moved between the horses that had been hooked on its packs.

The 2. / IR 19 in the annexation of Austria.

The street was still deserted and dark when we marched to the railway station in long and endless columns. Once on board, and when the wheels of our freight car started rolling we knew the objective: Austria.

We were detrained at Simbach by the River Inn on the border between Germany and Austria and occupied a bivouac for the night. On March 12, 1938 at 05:00 hours the battalion crossed the bridge over the River Inn and entered Braunau with the rejoicing of the people, our hearts beat with pride and those moments will be engraved in our minds forever. After marching 45 kilometers we reached the assigned goal: Reid. Meanwhile, in the midst of the joy of the crowd, still we had a chance to see the man who made this event possible: we saw the Führer!. He overtook us going down the road and a few minutes later the route of march was free again.

Hello to all :D; another unit.....................

The Pi Btl 7 in the annexation of Austria.

At noon on March 11, 1938 the motorized parts of the Pi Btl 7 moved towards Simbach on the Austrian border. The battalion's war diary read: enthusiasm among the soldiers for the task to be accomplished, is rumored to be leaving for Austria or Czechoslovakia. The oldest realized the gravity of the situation. In the afternoon the Commander ascertained the situation for crossing the bridge between Simbach and Braunau, birthplace of Adolf Hitler. Note: The troops are very excited and can not wait to take action.

The Pi Btl 7 in the annexation of Austria.

On March 12, 1938 the engineers crossed the border into Austria, where they were greeted by Austrian customs officials and border guards as well as several "boys", who later turned out to be SA men, who rallied to the cries by integrating the Reich. At 07:00 hours the Battalion Commander, Maj. Ullensperger and several officers, made a tour by the city in which Hitler was born and visited the birthplace of the Führer; however the Pi Btl 7 did not remain long in Braunau. The march continued towards Ried and then Lambach and Melk.

Hello to all :D; more follws.....................

The Pi Btl 7 in the annexation of Austria.

On March 17, 1938 the soldiers began to show signs of homesickness. On March 16, 1938 had been received the Army Corps provisions relating to continuing toward the ultimate goal of that march, Ried, where the battalion quartered temporarily. In the company began the comments that they were to stay in Austria.

Despite the enthusiasm for the operation and the beauty of the country, considering the magnificent main headquarters on the Inn, the mood was not the best. Maj. Ullersperger noted that the officers' mess of the garrison at Ried was extremely modest and simple, and that the officers of the former Austrian army were old and relatively very poorly dressed.

Hello to all :D; last part.....................

The Pi Btl 7 in the annexation of Austria.

Meanwhile, on March 13, 1938, a Sunday, the Mayor Gmelch arranged a holiday for the next day and announced the "Ceremony of the brotherhood of Tyrol and the German Wehrmacht in Rosenheim," with the participation of one honor company of territorial riflemen of Tyrol, which of course had to take place within reasonable limits. It were called to take part in "all branches of the Party" and the "Rosenheim population in general" and they were invited for the Monday morning at 11:15 hours.

In view of the Austrians, who went through the streets of Rosenheim for the first time in the great country, it was all joy and laughter of happiness. So they marched through the streets amidst the cheers of the crowd, with hands outstretched and filled with waving flags in the bright sun, to the Max-Joseph-Platz.

The battalion returned to its garrison in Rosenheim on March 29, 1938 and two days after it the mobilization ended and the Pi Btl 7 could be proud of having taken part in the operation ordered by the Führer, which ended with the union of both German nations.

Hello to all :D; a new story.....................

The Gebirgs-Brigade during the annexation of Austria - the "Anschluss".

On March 10, 1938 the Geb. Pi Btl 54 was entrained at Mittelbach and transported by rail to the Austrian border. The 1. / Geb Pi Btl 54 was attached to the GJR 98, while the 2. / Geb. Pi Btl 54 was attached to the 99 GJR, which on March 11, 1938 had been deployed on the border. After being detrained in Freislassing, followed a night march by Bad Reichenhall - Berchtesgaden - Rossfeld and the Salzach bridge near Hallein, where the 2. Company inspected the bridge seeking for explosives and mines.

On March 12, 1938 the GJR 99 and the GJR 100 crossed the border and marched into Salzburg and then continue the march to Vienna, a city in which the Gebirs-Brigade remained until March 31, 1938; from that date it returned to its peace garrison.

The Gebirgs-Brigade during the annexation of Austria - the "Anschluss".

On March 12, 1938 the GJR 98 took part in Operation Otto, the annexation of Austria to the Third Reich. In that operation the regiment was not involved with the Gebirgs-Brigade but was attached to the Grenzschutz-Abschnittskommando 10 (Command of the Border Defence Sector 10). The regiment was reinforced with the following units:

The II. Abteilung / Gebirgs-Artillerie-Regiment 79
The I. Sturmbann of the SS-Totenkopfverbande "Oberbayern"
1./Geb. Pi Btl 54.

The GJR 98 marched no more than 30 kilometers from its garrison near the Austrian border to Innsbruck Tyrol's capital. Oberstleutnant Schörner continued in his car to the Italian border at the Brenner Pass and there shook hands with the Italian soldiers at 13:00 hours of that March 12, 1938. As a note among the officers of the regiment was Leutnant Weg Chiang, son of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek.
