The 45 ID – Main effort.

Attack across the River Bug.

Barbarossa. June 22, 1941.

Due north, the 3. / IR 135 under Leutnant Zumpe captured intact the railway bridge north of the fortress with his assault echelon.

To the south the attack carried out by the IR 130 progressed well and with the support of the assault boats of the Pi Btl 81 crossed the Bug and secured the bridges over the Muchawiec southwest of the city and held them in spite of the Soviet counterattacks; 12 Russian tanks were destroyed there. The highway bridge south of the city was soon released to the traffic and the Pi Btl 81 built a bridge of 8 ton under enemy fire in northern edge of the citadel.

The III. / IR 135 commanded by Hauptmann Praxa had planned the attack in detail, building sand tables based on aerial photographs and maps from the days of the occupation in 1939; the battalion's task was to conquer the western island and the citadel. When the artillery barrages began the assault waves were some 30 meters away from the river Bug, at 03:19 hours the first wave, led by Leutnant Wieltsch rushed into the river dragging their boats and crossed the stream, the second wave will followed at 03:23 hours.

The German soldiers stormed the fort and clashed heavily against around 300 defenders mostly from the detachment of border guards and school units, after overcoming the resistance the Germans broke through the Terespol gate and entered the citadel, taking the officers' mess (the old church) and the mess of the 84 Rifle Regiment, but then the assault stalled.

The Commanding Officer of the III. Battalion (Infantry regiment 135) was killed in action, as well the Commanding Officer of the I. / AR 99 who had been moved ahead to reconnoitre. It was impossible to provide fire support to the troops engaged within the Citadel because of the proximity of German and Russian soldiers.

All attempts in order to support the German soldiers with infantry howitzers (IG), antitank cannons (Paks) and light howitzers (Ie FH) in direct fire, did not result because of problems of observation and type of fortification. Even an assault gun battery that the Commander of IR 135 brought on its own initiative got any result.

The Soviet troops in the rear were awakened by the sounds of alarms, but for the defenders of Brest-Litovsk the alarm was the war itself!. Surprised at first and still half-naked, the Russians soon were organized for defense; considering the dead and that nearly half the garrison managed to leave the fortress, it can be seen that over 3000 Red Army soldiers took part in the fighting that ensued.

By midmorning the AA 45 was given the task of raking the city and to asure the railway station, in the city itself there were only frightened civilians and almost no enemies, even at the station they offered little resistance.

About noon the troops of the IR 130 had conquered much of the Volyn fortress (South Island) taken the hospital there, but were met with stiff resistance at the hands of trainees at the school of the 84 Rifle Regiment. The IR 133, until that time Army Reserve, was employed in the afternoon on the southern and western islands but it did not change the situation. Every time the Russian soldiers were expelled, other appeared from sewers, basements and nearby buildings.

In order to destroy the Soviet tanks that will surely try to flee out of the fortress and to clean the city was also engaged the Pz Jäg Abt 45 (less its 1. Company in support of IR 130) which was located north of the city.

At 13:50 hours the commander of the 45 ID conducted a personal inspection of the positions of IR 135 (North Island) and realized that the citadel could not be taken in combat by the infantry and at 14:30 hours he decided to withdraw his troops in order to encircle the fortress; then in the morning on June 23, 1941 to carry out the destruction of the strongholds by accurate observed fire of all weapons.

This decision was approved by the Commander of 4 AOK who did not want unnecessary losses and on the evening of June 22, 1941 was given the order to retreat and start the siege of the citadel with the IR 133 reinforced with I. / AR 98 (Brest) and the II. / AR 98 from the west, south and east, while the IR 135 reinforced by the III. / AR 98 would do it from the north.

The Morser-Abt 854 located in Koroszyn (sector of the 31ID) was available to the 45 ID, and also three heavy mortar deployed with the 34th ID, but the latter were not used due to lack of personnel and communication links, but instead it was used the ammunition assigned to them. The thickness of the walls was a good shelter against the shells from artillery and hampered the destruction of the strongholds to the attacker, but also hindered the deployment of weapons and caused blind spots to the defender. This first day's fighting had cost the 45 ID 21 officers and 290 noncommissioned officers and soldiers killed in action.

During the night of 22 to 23 June 1941 the troops of the IR 133 and the IR 135 were ordered to retreat from the citadel, though parts of the III. / IR 135 and some engineers were besieged in the Church of the central island; during the night there was a radio contact with the surrounded troops and also it was known that they had took some prisoners.

On June 23, 1941 At 05:00 hours it was unleashed the fire for effect on the central island and the southern edge of the northern island. The fire consisted of shooting of the heavy pieces with large barrages of artillery, however in the fire breaks the Russians riflemen reappeared out of their trenches and shelters.

At 09:00 hours from the 4 AOK was detached a loudspeaker, through which it was pointed out to the Soviet soldiers, the hopelessness of their resistance and invited them to surrender.

Regardless, the division had requested that some tanks were attached to it,in order to carry out an effective cleaning of the islands, for it was the only way to avoid unnecessary casualties. Until the evening of this day surrendered about 2000 Russian soldiers, who said that many of the troops intended to give up, but the political commissars and officers threatened them with shoot them and told them that the Germans would kill them all. Meanwhile it was continued the heavy fire of destruction. At 14:00 hours arrived at CP of the 45 ID two vehicles with loudspeakers, one large and one smaller; once the division drafted the appropriate statement and considering the most appropriate wind direction, both were sent to the sector of the IR 135 in the North Island. After a brief suspension of fire between 17:00 and 17:15 hours, it was issued the statement, giving to the Russians a period of half an hour to surrender. When the fire suddenly ceased at 18.30 hours about 1,900 Russians surrendered, so it was felt that the resistance was weakened enough and repeating the concentrations of artillery and the propaganda campaign, the citadel could be taken without suffering high losses.

On the Soviet side the growing German pressure forced the defenders of the 3. Battalion of the 84 Rifle Regiment (Commissar E. Fomin) to retreat from the Port of kholmsk and the Fomin's CP was moved to the vicinity of the Port of Brest.

After the failure of the propaganda and the intense Russian fire, had become clear that only a few Russian soldiers had surrendered, while others the most recalcitrant, maintained his fighting spirit spurred on by the commissars, who stated that anyway after surrendering, they would be shot by the Germans, therefore to resist was the only way left.

The commander of the 45 ID decided to use the cover of the embankments of the road and the railway in order to continue beating the Russian fortifications with accurate fire of artillery and at each lull in the fight, to call again the enemy soldiers to lay down their weapons and surrender, trying to undermine their morale.

This resolution was discussed by the Divisional Commander the CoS of the 4 AOK and both agreed to avoid useless bloodshed, only had to secure the traffic along the main supply route of the tanks (rollbahn).

The decision to continue with the artillery fire was very difficult because there was still men of the division encircled in the church of the citadel and occasionally asked for support by radio. In order not to risk their lives, it was prevented the fire on the church and it was renounced the use of heavy mortars.

Between 11:30 and 11:45 hours was unleashed a powerful bombardment, after which again was called to surrender through the loudspeakers. Shortly before a new radio communication with the encircled troops reported that 50 men still held there, some wounded and very exhausted. Then it was decided to send a combat patrol of the IR 133 to free the trapped soldiers.

Taking advantage of the heavy bombardment between 11:30 and 11:45 hours elements of IR 133 could free the surrounded soldiers and seized the citadel with the exception of a few buildings, the IR 135 conquered the western part of the North Island and the II. / IR 133 did the same with the South Island. About 1250 prisoners were captured in these actions. The Russians held only the officers' mess in the citadel, the eastern sector of the North Island, essentially a wall on the north bridge (work 145) and the East fort.

At dusk during the raking tasks, Soviet troops in company strenght tried to break to the east by the Muchawiec bridge but were destroyed. Further attempts to break were expected by the Russians during the night, hence it was strengthen a weak point located between the IR 135 and the III. / IR 133 there it was committed the AA 45. In fact Russian armored and infantry attempted to break during that night but were rejected. The CP of the 45 ID moved from Terespol to Brest-Litovsk.

From early morning continued the cleaning within the pockets of resistance under orders of the Commander of the IR 135; the II / IR 130 and the Aufkl. Abt.45 plus the III / I.R. 133 were subordinate also in order to rake the North Island. The artillery action was not possible due to the limited area. Infantry means were unsuccessful due to the thickness of the walls, the heavy tanks or assault guns were the most appropriate means but were not present. It was not possible to make more efficient use of flamethrowers of Pi Btl 81 because they could not come close to attack the buildings. From the Division it was attempted, therefore, get some captured Russian tanks and put them ready for action, but it would be possible only after June 26, 1941.

It was also required the use of Pz zug 28 (armored train) equipped with three French armored type Somua, what is expected from June 26, 1941 onwards. While the assault troops of the Pi Btl 81 cleared the officer's mess in the citadel. From the roof were placed explosive charges through the openings and then were detonated; from outside it could be heard the groans of the wounded and dying Russians, but still they kept shooting so the Germans continued the fight from house to house while waiting for the tanks.
