Defense of Prague in September 1939.

Actions.

On September 25, 1939 the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Adolf Hitler with his Chief of Staff arrived at the front and witnessed the shelling of positions in the western part of Warsaw from the tower of the race and sports stadium.

The operations of the 8 AOK would start in the morning on September 26 1939 with an intense artillery preparation against the defensive positions in Warsaw.

On September 25, 1939 began operations against Warsaw, conquering several strong points along the defensive line in the West and Southwest; but it did not include Prague which was only subjected to artillery fire. In the meantime had reached the Polish defensive lines some officers of that nationality who were taken prisoners requesting the surrender of the city. A large amount of supplies were lost as a result of artillery fire on the East station of Warsaw. Unfortunately the food stocks were melted.

Defense of Prague in September 1939.

Actions.

At dawn on September 26, 1939, the German forces launched their infantry supported by tanks against the Polish positions, the first target of the attack: docks on the southeast end of the town - north edge of the airfield Mokotow - railway ring - Vistula - the north bridge. SW and O the attack progresses slowly, falling the fort of Mokotow. The XI AK attacked Warsaw from the north and the XIII AK did the same from the south. The I AK supported the attack from Prague with the 11 ID to the XIII AK and with the 217 ID to XI AK, the 61 ID engaged the Polish forces before their positions.

Hauptmann Steinhardt and Leutnant Stolz of IR 51 conducted a glorious feat. At the head of a detachment reinforced with pioneers they attacked Fort II located in Wawrzyszewa, which was fiercely defended by the enemy. The Infantry of Hauptmann Steinhardt cleared the way to the fort, while Leutnant Stolz won a Polish anti-tank position and then emplaced their guns against the fort itself. Cheering, the brave soldiers stormed the fortress. The two officers later received the Knights Cross on behalf the Führer and Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht. At dusk the forces of the XIII AK had captured Mokotow and Ochota, although it was not reached the objective of the day. The continuation of the attack was ordered for September 27 at 06:00 hours.

Defense of Prague in September 1939.

Actions.

The IR 42.

Early in the morning Oberstleutnant Dr. Phil Uebe was buried in the castle of D. Ursinow.

To continue the attack on Warsaw:

The I. Battalion (right) had within its sector, a rubber factory and a sausage factory. The I. / AR 114 set afire the rubber factory with its bursts. The battalion battle groups won some houses on the Allee Sobieskiego and the suburbs of Henrykow, some patrols reached the anti-tank ditch before the sausage factory. But the attack was stopped by fire from the flanks.

The II. Battalion (left) attacked with its company to the far left end (5. / IR 42) a large gray fortified monoblock from which the Germans received heavy fire at close range, but nevertheless could reach the northern boundary of the park of Krolikarnia. The company was supported by the 2. / Pi 62 but soon after reaching the plateau received heavy fire from the flank which soon caused the death of 20 engineers and serious injuries to the Company Leader, who died shortly afterwards.

As a the key spot in the sector was recognized a house with red walls on which the artillery fire was directed (Battery Orth, 2. / AR 115 and 6. / AR 49 with heavy howitzers). The offering of 6 tanks (2. / PR 23) was not accepted for being “a magnet for the Polish fire" for the unprotected infantry.

Casualties in the Regiment: 6 dead and 40 wounded. The II. Battalion was relieved by the III. Battalion.

Such a small combat incident from the Polish campaign:

Talk with one of probably just 2 remaining veterans of tank units equipped with 7 TP tanks in 1939:

http://www.tvp.pl/historia/magazyny-his ... 00/4266937

His name is Tadeusz Krystosiak and he is 92 years old. The other known 7 TP veteran is 100 years old.

He took part in defence of Warsaw. On 08.09.1939 he participated in defence of the Narutowicza Square in Warsaw - 3 Pz-IIs attacked the baricade there and one Pz-II was knocked out by tank of podchorąży Kracherski.

On 10.09.1939 Mr. Krystosiak took part in a sudden tank clash which took place near Wawrzyszew Cemetery. That was late in the evening on 10.09.1939. Polish tanks were from 2nd Light Tanks Company of the Command of the Defence of Warsaw. In the evening part of the company (including the platoon in which Krystosiak served) was sent with task of reconnoitring the terrain between Kampinos Forest and the Warszawa-Leszno road. One Polish tank platoon (including Krystosiak's 7 TP) just after crossing the cemetery suddenly ran into one German tank platoon from behind. 2 German tanks were knocked out, 1 managed to escape. 3 trucks were also destroyed. German POWs were taken. Poles captured weapons, ammo, gasoline, radiostation & recaptured several dozens of POWs. A standard of Ursus Factory, which had been carried by those Germans as a trophy, was recaptured:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursus_Factory

The destroyed German platoon was from Panzer-Regiment 36. Apparently Germans which were in that area (including that platoon) were given the task of escorting Polish POWs gathered there after the assault (possibly some of them were from outside of the city, captured while trying to get to Warsaw - as the text below indicates):

Here is how Christoph Avender's ww2 day by day website describes that skirmish:

"In the evening tanks of the 1.Kp. advanced to the west end of Wawrzyszew to have a better position. They stop groups of polish soldiers that wanted to sneak into Warschau. After they left their weapons they were sent back to the west because there was no personnel to guard the prisoners. After sunset a Lt. of PR.36 arrived with 200 prisoners from the west as they spotted armoured vehicles that entered a wood nearby. It was not clear they were friend or foe. But suddenly 3,7mm guns fired and destroyed 2 tanks of 1.Kp. The Lt. of PR.36 was KIA at this attack."

Mr. Tadeusz Krystosiak and his 7 TP tank:

Hello to all :D; thanks Domen for sharing that story here. Now more follows...............

Defense of Prague in September 1939.

The Actions.

27 Sep 1939.

The 9. and the 11. Companies pushed ahead up to the gardens of the castle organized into assault teams; in front of the 9. / IR 42 marched the battalion commander, Maj. Mayr. The Poles counterattacked with forces of about 3 companies with main effort on the fort Tsche but were rejected by the 7. Company. On the left the IR 41 (10 ID) seized the gray monoblock. To the right, in the sector of the 1. / IR 42 the Poles managed to break the German lines, there the company commander, Oberleutnant d.R. Küfner, was killed in action while leading the counterattack. The acting Commander of the I. Battalion, Hauptmann Audorff restored the situation with the 2. Company.

Then at 10:00 hours reached the regiment the news that Warsaw would be taken without a fight and they were discussing its surrender. The II. Battalion remained between the fort Tsche and the castle. The three days of fighting against Warsaw cost the regiment 35 killed and 114 wounded in action.

Hello to all :D ; a new theme which complement this old thread ......... this time looking a little on the German advance towards Wielun in September 1939 ...........

A Light Division in advance on Wielun - September, 1939.

First of all I would like give some information on the origin of this unit and its armored and motorized elements. The PR 11 was organized in Paderborn (WK VI) on October 12, 1937 as an Army level troop, led by Oberst Wilhelm Phillips. At the beginning consisted of 6 companies with the staff of PR 1, 3, 4 and 8. From the 3. and 6. Companies of PR 1 were created the 1. and 2. companies of PR 11, with the 3. and 8. companies of PR 4 were created the 5. and 6. Companies of PR 11; from the 5. Company of PR 3 was organized the 7. / PR 11 and the 3. / PR 11 was created from a company of PR 8.

While the Pz Abt 65 was also organized on October 12, 1937 in Sennelager within WK VI with three companies under the command of Oberstleutnant Kurt Thomas. During the Polish campaign in September 1939 it was attached to the 1. Le. Div. Its motorized regiment was created as Kavallerie-Schützen-Regiment 4 on October 12, 1937 with HQ and two battalions in Iserlohn, WK VI. On August 26, 1939 it was called Schützen-Regiment 4 and was in command of Oberst Hans von Ravenstein.
