Soviet counterattacks at Grodno on 24. - 25.6.41

Have anyone info on German casualties on 24. - 25.6.41 at Grodno and SW of it when Soviet 6th and 11th Mechanized Corps counterattacked? German 256th ID took the brunt of 6th Mech. Corps (c. 900 tanks of which 300-350 were new KVs and T-34s) and part of 11th Mech.Corps (much weaker) attacks. I own a copy of the Initial Period of War on the Eastern Front. Are there any more detailed description on the battle in English? Have anyone read the div. history of 256th (in German)? Is there any detailed description of the battle in it ?

Der Kampf urn Kuznica am 24. 6. 1941 *Kuznica=15km Southweat of Grodno
Am Morgen des 24. 6. standen das verstärkte InfRgt48l der 256. InfDiv und die sehr starke Vorausabteilung v. Bornstedt weit vorgezogen - d. h. Relativ einsam - in der Mitte der 256. InfDiv in Kuznica. Insgesamt hatte diese Gruppe eine außergewöhnlich große Kampfkraft. Vorausgesetzt, daß die Divisionsbefehle tatsächlich realisiert worden waren - das KTB 256. InfDiv gibt hierüber etwas widersprüchliche Angaben - bestand sie aus:
Infanteristische Kräfte (einschließlich Radfahrschwadronen und Pioniere): 5 1/2 Bataillone
Panzerjäger: 2 2/3 Kompanien
Sturmgeschütze: 2 Batterien
Artillerie: 1 leichte Abteilung
1 schwere Abteilung
1 2/3 Infanterie-Geschütz-Kompanien
Flak: 1 Batterie
Entsprechend dem Divisionsbefehl, auf Indura vorzustoßen, trat die Vorausabteilung v. Bornstedt um 07.00 Uhr zum Angriff auf Podlipki (4km südostwärts Kuznica) an, blieb jedoch bereits auf den Höhenzügen ostwärts Kuznica wegen Feindabwehr und Panzerangriffen aus Podlipki und Nowodziel 4km südlich Kuznica liegen. Da sich ein weiteres Vordringen als unmöglich erwies, wurde die Vorausabteilung vom InfRgt48l, dem sie unterstellt war, in eine allgemeine Abwehrfront eingegliedert. Es standen nun: Westlich und südwestlich Kuznica das I. und III/InfRgt48l, links daneben d.h. ostwärts Kuznica auf den Höhen vor Podlipki die Vorausabteilung >v. Bornstedt<, während II/InfRgt48l in nördlicher und nordostwärtiger Richtung sicherte.
In dieser Stellung wurden gegen 08.00 Uhr Angriffe aus Richtung Sokolka abgewiesen.
Dem Regimentskommandeur InfRgt48l - zugleich Kommandeur der Kampfgruppe um Kuznica - wird bekannt gewesen sein, daß sich das verstärkte InfRgt476 am Abend des 23. 6. etwa 12-15 km nordwestlich Kuznica und das verstärkte InfRgt456 zur gleichen Zeit 12km nördlich Kuznica in Bielany befunden hatten. Mit Bingreifen beider Regimenter im Laufe des Tages konnte er also rechnen. Tatsächlich traf allerdings InfRgt476 mit vordersten Teilen erst gegen 18.00 Uhr südwestlich Kuznica ein und InfRgt456 im Laufe des Nachmittags nordostwärts Kuznica.
Über feindliche Panzeransammlungen im Raum Indura, Dubowa Stara und Odelsk sowie über den Anmarsch weiterer Kräfte mit motorisierter Artillerie und Panzern auf der Straße Bialystok, Sokolka, Kuznica wurde er im Laufe des Tages durch Aufklärungsflieger orientiert.
Seine zunächst noch isolierte Kampfgruppe hatte nun bis zum Abend des 24. 6. mit Schwerpunkt am Nachmittag nicht weniger als zwölf feindliche Panzerangriffe abzuwehren.
Diese Angriffe erfolgten anscheinend mit Hartnäckigkeit nur frontal gegen die Stellung der Kampfgruppe um Kuznica. Sie wurden im Zusammenwirken der starken Abwehrmittel der Gruppe mit durch Artillerieflieger gelenktem Artilleriefeuer und mit Stuka-Angriffen sämtlich abgeschlagen, wobei etwa achtzig sowjetische Panzer vernichtet werden konnten.

Verlauf der Kämpfe am 25. 6. 1941
In den frühen Morgenstunden traf die 204. MotSchtzDiv im Raum Indura em. Ihr Marsch hatte sich durch außergewöhnliche Sicherungsmaßnahmen gegen Luftangriffe erheblich verzögert: Marsch in Gruppen zu 3 his 4 Fahrzeugen, Gruppenabstand etwa 100 m.
Aus der Bereitstellung um Indura/Odelsk wurden im Laufe des Tages verschiedene Panzerdemonstrationen gegen Kuznica unternommen, denen am späten Nachmittag ein schwerer Angriff mit zusammengefaßten Panzerkräften (nach deutschen Angaben 150 his 200 Panzer) gegen das nördlich Kuznica verteidigende InfRgt 456 der 256. InfDiv sowie Teile des im Brückenkopf südlich Grodno stehenden 84. InfRgt der 8. InfDiv folgte. Der Aufmarsch hierzu war frühzeitig von einem Aufklärungsflieger des VIII. AK festgestellt worden. Auch dieser Angriff wurde abgeschlagen, doch hat er sicher beeindruckt und den Abmarsch der Gruppe Boldin erleichtert.
Zweifellos endeten die sowjetischen Angriffe des 24. und 25. Juni stüdlich und südwestlich Grodno mit einer schweren taktischen Niederlage. Trotz stärkstem Panzereinsatz war es nicht gelungen, die in wenig glücklicher Position kämpfenden Verbände des deutschen XX. AK zu zerschlagen. Im Gegenteil: es mußten überaus schwere Panzerverluste hingenommen werden. Nach Angaben des XX. AK wurden an sowjetischen Panzern vernichtet:

Das aus sowjetischer Sicht taktisch negative Ergebnis mag insbesondere zurückzuführen sein auf
1. Ansatz der Angriffe aus der Bewegung,
2. unzulängliche Artillerieunterstützung,
3. völliges Fehlen von Luftstreitkräften.
Operativ wirkten sich die sowjetischen Angriffe gleichwohl als Erfolg aus:
Das deutsche XX. AK wurde derart hart angepackt, daß es erst am 27. Juni wieder in der Lage war, zur Offensive mit größerem Ziel überzugehen. Damit hatte es dreieinhalb Tagemärsche verloren.
In diesem Zeitraum war die Räumung der Bobr-Linie - abgesehen von starken Nachhuten bei Osowiec - durchgeführt worden. Da auch ein Debouchieren der Deutschen aus ihren Narewbrückenköpfen südwestlich und südlich Bialystok bis zum 26. 6. verhindert werden konnte, war zum mindesten überwiegend ein organisierter Abmarsch von Zentrum und rechtem Flügel der 10. Armee bis zum Ros-Abschnitt nördlich Wolkowysk sichergestellt.

I have some knowledge on German so I can understand most of the text, more or less, even if I must check some details with my dictionary.
Those reinforcements partly explained why 256th wasn't overrun by Soviet armour.

I have one question to ask. What are the XTs in Your 19.7. message in the Soviet tank strenght list? Are they light amphibious tanks (T-37, T-38 and T-40), armoured cars (B-10, B-6 etc.) or heavy tractors (STZ-3 and STZ-5) or something else?

Although I seldom have knowledge about the tank, probably I think that they are the general terms of Kh Tank (KhT-26, KhT-130, KhT-134).

Very interesting info, especially the numbers of Khs. One question again. The numbers of the new tanks are little bit lower (20 less KVs and 38 less T-34s) than the numbers I have seen for the last 11 years which btw are the same that You gave in your first message on 19.7. because all the new tanks in Western Special Military district were concentrated in 6th and 11th Mech. Corps. Have You any knowledge why the numbers are lower in this recent Russian book?

Fighting around Grodno - Jun 1941.

Although the 6th Mechanized Corps was to counterattack the German XX. AK, the 11th mechanized Corps unleashed a counterattack against the German 8. ID (VIII. AK) and the 29 Tank Div deployed near Grodno was able to respond on short notice. Under influence of the German impact, the staff of the 3rd Soviet Army had left Grodno and went to Luno. Pavlov order: "29th Tank Div, together with the 4th Rifle Corps must destroy the opponent, attacking in direction Sapotskin - Kalety. By 12:00 hours the Soviet division deployed its depleted 57th and 59th Tank Regiments and bumped into a kampfgruppe of the IR 84, supported by some assault guns of Stug Abt 184.

Soldaten gegen tod und teufel: A wide, endlessly long cloud of pale yellow dust weighs on the land. Almost flat, sometimes rising slightly in a gentle wave, it seems to lose itself in the endless distance. The roads run in straight lines toward horizon with no end in sight. We have broken out of the thick forests of the Suwalki point, with its strange melancholy of endlessness and monotonous colors. The short rest, used to look over the strange world in front of us, is over. The march eastward begins. The living river of German soldiers pours through the smashed open gate of the Soviet line of fortifications. Despite the severity and exertion of the previous battle, we must not rest. That was only the beginning. The bulk of the division (8. ID) has assembled for the great march after the comrades fought the way open.

"Panzers approaching from ahead!" The shout comes from an advance patrol and resounds along the ranks. This shout electrifies and penetrates to the marrow, for a moment causing a feeling of insecurity. The panzer is the deadliest enemy of an infantry division. We do indeed have defensive weapons, light and heavy ones. Shaking and rattling, our motorized assault guns drive up. They are heavy, massive panzer colossus without a turret with threatening gun barrels protruding. Although there are not many, just one battery, they are the heaviest weapon in anti-tank combat. This is their crews’ first combat, but they go into battle with an impressive calm and confidence.

The anti-tank crews have taken their positions, well camouflaged despite the haste. The motorized assault guns drive up the road to the right and left. Now we must wait. But it is only the beginning. None one us knew that cry "Tanks advancing from the front!" was just the start of a tank battle the likes of which had probably never been fought before by an infantry division. This battle started in the hot midday and lasted eleven hours, almost without pause.

However the counterattack failed and with the loss of half of its sixty-six tanks the Soviet caused fifty casualties to the Germans.
