Woronesch - Don line winter 42/43

Post by panzerschreck1 » Sat Aug 12, 2006 2:01 am

2nd Armee:

28. Januar 1943, Donnerstag

Im Raum von Woronesch vereinigen sich die von Norden und Süden angreifenden Verbände der Roten Armee und schließen dadurch sieben Divisionen der 2. deutschen Armee ein.

Can anyone elaborate the vicious fighting that occured in those wintermonths on the Don stellung and Woronesch?

I have heard about some terrible fightings for some small islands on the Don, the river Don was frozen and the russian army tried to cross several times the don over the ice, hence the great importance of the small islands on the don for the german defensive positions, in front of the triangle Kursk Bjelgorod Charkow (i know it is a big area any info will come in handy, or a book recommendation)

At the end of the winter around march 43 the don army withdrew into the area of Charkow where the famous third battle of Charkow was fought.
Can someone also elaborate more how diificult the exact retreat was from the don to Charkow?

I know there was a massive russian breakthrough in the southern area of the don and it followed the german retreating army in a north-western approach ending up all the way in Charkow a maasive penetration here by the russian forces!

Hello to all :D; a brief account............................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

From mid-November 1942, the 2. German Army took part in the defensive battles at the Woronesch bridgehead and the Don line. At the beginning of 1943 this army sheltering the Generaloberst Hans v. Salmuth and subordinate to Army Group B (Generalfeldmarschall Maximilian Reichsfreiherr v. Weichs), comprised the following Army Corps:

VII.AK = 323.ID, 1/3 168.ID, 75. ID and 57.ID, 1/3 383.ID (Group V) and Oberst Roth's Kampfgruppe;
XIII. AK = 377. ID, 340. ID, 68. ID and 82.ID;
LV.AK = 1/3 88.ID, 2/3 383.ID, 45. ID and 299.ID

The 57 ID; the 75 ID and 323 ID members of the VII AK retained the Woronesch bridgehead.

In the A.O.K.2 area, the 57. ID, together with the 75.ID and the 323. ID, under the orders of General Kdo.VII. AK was bent on the Woronesh bridgehead. To the right of 57. ID and on the Don, downstream from the mouth of the Woronesh, was the Kgl.ung. III. AK, to the left and next to the bridgehead position was 88. ID. A position had been explored and established on the Don west of Woronesch, but it was only partially expanded due to a lack of barbed wire, mines, and other materials.

But on January 12, 1943, the Soviets attacked the Hungarian front (2nd Hungarian Army) with strong forces and achieved deep penetrations. On January 14 the III. Hungarian AK informed that it had to withdraw. Then on 15 January, the German 2nd Army ordered the relief of the 57th ID of the bridgehead and the formation of the Siebert Army Corps Group (Korpsgruppe). The detachment of the 57. ID was carried out according to plan. Until January 24, 1943, the Korpsgruppe had succeeded in holding the Staro Melovoje-Siniye Lipyagi-Kotechowka-Aleksandrowka line on the Don and defeating three tank-reinforced Soviet divisions. On 25 January a Soviet armored unit had managed to break through to Gorshechnoye (Горшечное).

Building on its successes further south, the Red Army continued its offensive with "Operation Woronesch-Kastornoje" on 23 January, which led to the evacuation of the Woronesch bridgehead on the German side on the night of 23/24. January 1943. Previously, the III. Hungarian Army Corps had been broken and also in the area of the "Northern Front" - here was the 340.ID - the enemy made deep penetrations with the aim of isolating German units west and northwest of Woronesh from their rear communications and thus surround them.

In January 1943, the 4. Pz was withdrawn from the front to reorganize and re-equip in Orel. But since the Stalingrad catastrophe had now occurred and the Woronesch front had also collapsed further north, the division was relocated to the Kursk area at high speed by rail and road, with the task of stabilizing the front there as much as possible. eastward possible. Vehicles and other equipment will be provided, where possible, and all troops will be dispatched to the new operational area.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

On January 25, 1943, the 168. ID and the remains of the Hungarian 1. DB arrived at the Army Corps Cramer (now part of 2. Army). The Korpsgruppe Siebert withstood heavy enemy attacks in its sector. At the Woronesh bridgehead the fighting rearguards managed to break contact with the enemy and retreat to the western bank of the Don River. 2. Army was also attacked from the north but successfully resisted this threat.

While in the 299. ID the command post of GR 530 was moved to Krassny on January 25, 1943. On the morning of January 25, 1943, the enemy ran over 383. ID. Both army withdrawal routes were closed and two army corps with 5 divisions were encircled. The regiment sector remained calm throughout the day. In the evening, the regiment was ordered to detach a battalion from the front and immediately hand it over to the 383. ID. Trucks to load the battalion were already on the way and the logistics train units were due to leave for Nikolayevka, 20 kilometers south of Senoyevka. The I. Battalion then marched to fulfill its new task at 10 pm at minus 35 degrees Celsius without heavy weapons. The II. and III. Battalion divided the free sector among themselves.

From January 26 at 08:00, the Korpsgruppe S. was once again subordinate to the VII. AK. On January 26 the Russian tanks had penetrated Gorshechnoye. At the front, the strong points were generally able to hold out. At Rossoshki, the reinforced Pi.157 had arrived in time to halt the advance. The GR 217 was again subordinate to the Korpsgruppe and marched west to Nizhnedevitsk (Нижнедевицк), the I./GR 217 marched south to Pi. 157. The GR 199 and the I./GR 217 should destroy the enemy forces that had penetrated. While it was possible to achieve ground gain in parts, the GR 592 (?) was unable to advance due to roads and snow conditions. The order for the Korpsgruppe S specified the Korpsgruppe was to cover in the area around Stary Oskol (Старый Оскол) south of the Devitsa valley between Gorshechnoye and the Don, the southern flank of the divisions that retreat from the bridgehead along the main route.

In the early hours of the morning on January 24, Ski-Bataillon 323 arrived at Latnaya station, where it was supposed to be loaded according to the division's orders. The battalion boarded the train under continuous low-level attacks from Soviet aircraft and arrived in Kastornoje the next day. After the successful Russian advance against the Hungarian 2nd Army on the Don, the battalion was embarked here at an accelerated pace and then marched towards Krasnaya Dolina, some 10 km further south. On January 26, the battalion moved further south in the Olym Valley to the Vasilievka area. From there it was subordinated to the 68. ID, whose command post was in Werchn. Olym.

As for the 4. Pz, the necessary orders were issued on January 26, 1943. On January 26, the Kradsch. Btl 34 (Major Hans-Joachim Kahler), reinforced with the 4. / PAR 103 (Oblt. Gerstenmeier), embarked as an advance detachment at Orel. The guns were towed with tractor vehicles from the workshops. The download was made in Shchigry.

GR 592 was part of 325. ID in Denmark; could be GR 591 or 593 of 323. ID.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

At dawn on January 26, 1943, the I. / GR 530 reached Kriwzowo-Plota, 35 kilometers south of Liwny on the railway line leading south from Liwny. At 6:00 p.m., the trucks moved southeast. In Turchanovo, the soldiers were unloaded around midnight. They occupied the anti-tank trench that runs east of Turchanovo on the Rollbahn. There, the 383. ID with the GR 135 and GR 531 desperately tried to build a new line of resistance.

At first light the enemy began their attack on January 27, 1943. On the Rollbahn, the enemy appeared with trucks and tanks in front of the battalion's eyes in a huge display. Without their heavy weapons, the grenadiers had to sit still and watch the enemy make preparations. At 08:00 the enemy concentrations were destroyed by the Stukas, but soon new masses were launched. The I. / GR 530 crushed the first waves within range of the machine guns, but from left to right they sped through the open gaps, heavy artillery fire falling into the anti-tank ditch. At 11:30 am, the battalion received the order to move to Turchanovo. With heavy losses, the battalion retreated onto the open road in deep snow.

The enemy followed immediately, and after intense house-to-house fighting, the place had to be abandoned. At the next strong point, Rogatik, the I. / GR 530 was still able to muster about half the fighting force. The fights for each house begin anew, because the place must be maintained. But even here the battalion cannot last long. The remains, increasingly decimated, make their way through the ring of the compound towards Wyschne. There, the I. Battalion met with the Aufkl. Abt. 299. He had the task of reinforcing Rogatik, who was now lost. A few hours later, Wyschne is also abandoned. A desperate fight for a gap to the west began again.

On January 27, 1943, the 340.ID was deprived of its retreat route to Kastornoje by the enemy who advanced south of the Kobylja River and met on January 28. along with 377. ID in the Orechowo area, surrounded so to speak. For the planned breakthrough of the two army corps, three groups were formed the next day. The 340.ID, also seriously decimated, belonged together with the remains of the 377. ID and the 75. ID, as well as the remains of the 6th and 9th Hungarian divisions to the Beukemann Group (Generalleutnant Beukemann = Commander of the 75. ID ) and had approximately 9,000 men.

On January 27, Ski-Bataillon 323 continued its march south and reached the town of Verkhny Olym at the head of the Olym. Due to the lack of accommodation here, the troops suffered the first freezes. From the real objective of the march, the village of Gorschetschnoje, about 5 km away, the noise of the battle could be heard. The next day (January 28), the battalion was still in the same area. During the morning, the 1st and 2nd Companies advanced to the south, near point 232.5 west of the house of the Manager of the train station, with a security order to the west against the Gorsechnoye-Bykowo road. From the afternoon on, the Russian columns marching to the northwest were constantly observed on this road. Around noon, the two companies jointly repulsed an attack by a few Russian tanks against their positions with manned sleds.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

Meanwhile, the Soviet 40th Army advanced from the east on Stary Oskol and isolated much of the retreating Hungarian and German troops (VII Army Corps) in the Gorschetnoye area. It took 6 days for the retreating divisions to reach the Gorshechnoye area. It was certain that they would no longer reach the Olym sector without a fight. The east wing of the Korpsgruppe S. (Hungarian battle group) withdrew, therefore, the GR 164 and 593 were released and assembled at Werch. Turow, as the west wing stopped at Gorshechnoye.

The situation had developed as follows until January 31, 1943: Gorshechnoye was lost. To the east wing arrived the GR 164, 429 and 593 in a very difficult position, since the Hungarian battle groups had to give up their positions. The German regiments had to march cross country and destroy numerous vehicles and also artillery. The unshakable Schmidt Group (GR 199 reinforced) holding Siniye Lipyagi (Синие Липяги) had to prepare the break in the direction of Gorshechnoye. At first the attack on January 29 made good progress, then the enemy attacked from all sides, even with the air force, the regiment suffered bloody losses and Schmidt himself fell. The regiment rejected a Russian request for surrender. Since a break to the northwest was useless, the acting CO Hptm. Heindl (Commander of II./ GR 199) decided to fight his way west at night. The machine guns and mortars had already been lost. The pieces of the 13 and 14. Companies and III./AR 157 were blown up. In freezing cold and cross country through deep snow, about 400 men made their way to Kulevka (Кулевка), where they arrived on January 30 at 12:00 hours.

Meanwhile, the Korpsgruppe S. had ordered the destruction of all motor vehicles that were not directly necessary for combat or the transport of the wounded, as well as superfluous materials and equipment that could no longer be transported due to congested routes. The bulk of the 323. ID troops reached the area east of Gorshechnoye on January 28. The GR 164 and 591 fighting against the advancing enemy once again liberated the road to Yasenki (Ясенки).

On January 29 the 340. ID was 5 km south of Kastornoje still east of the railway line when the breakthrough began. The target was Tim on the river of the same name, where the 4th Panzer Division held a position. The enemy with strong tank support reached the Kastornoje - Sowjetskyj line from the north.

While in the 4. Pz, on January 29, 1943, the Kradsch. Btl 34 reinforced was moved to a receiving and bridgehead position at Tim. It was 2 degrees cold and there was a light layer of snow on the ground. After countless displaced people passed, the enemy appeared over the Tim on January 31, 1943 and was taken under fire by the 4th Battery. The march turns into a fight. Behind the advance detachment, most of the division, divided into several battle groups, reached the Kursk-Shchigry area.

The 299. ID withdrew from place to place. On January 29-30, 1943, all positions up to Tim were lost. There was no way to stop the whirlwind of the completely confused situation.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

Meanwhile, On January 30, 1943, Ski Battalion 323 was given the task to attack the western part of Berezovka, to block Rollbahn No. 17 to the northwest, to repel all attacks coming from about the northwest, and to clear Berezovka from the enemy to the east as far as possible in order the link with the Pi Btl 168 could be established. The mass of the battalion was assigned a deep hollow west of point 232.5 as a staging area. Since this depression runs in a southerly direction exactly towards the western edge of Berezovka, it should also be used for the attack.

The 1st and 2nd companies should initiate the attack first, the 4th (MG) company should take over fire protection and the 3rd company after the break-in of the 1st and 2nd companies as well as the establishment of security to the west and northwest of Berezovka to be completely cleared of the enemy. After three Stuka attacks on the Russians lying in Gorschetschnoje, the German attack began at 3:30 p.m. On the left, along the railway line, the I. / Grenadier Regiment 196 and the III. / Grenadier Regiment 188 of the 68th Infantry Division, supported by artillery, anti-tank guns and anti-aircraft guns. On the right, the Ski Battalion 323 deployed in the direction of Berezovka - Rollbahn 17, bend hard southwest of Berezovka.

From the east, the foremost parts of the "Combat Group Latz" (GR 591 and 323rd Infantry Division) were advancing. The ski battalion was advancing fairly quickly. With the visibility becoming weaker and weaker, the 2nd Company attacking on the right could see Russian columns advancing on Rollbahn No. 17. Within 15 minutes, the 2nd Company and its foremost groups had already reached the end of the incision. At 4:30 p.m. the 1st and 2nd companies reached the first houses in Berezovka.

To the east the attack by the parts of the 68th Infantry Division and the head of the Latz Combat Group had also made good progress. At 5:45 p.m., the Gorschetschnoje station and the intersection 600 m east of it were in German hands. From there, too, the cleansing of the place began. The 323 Ski Battalion now combed every house. The house-to-house fighting did not end until 01:45 a.m. and shortly afterwards the commanded connection with the Pi Btl 168 was established. The battalion's losses that day were enormous. It had lost about 30% of its combat strength.

On January 31, Russian troops attacked from Bykowo at around 09:00 a.m. Throughout the day, the battalion repelled Russian attacks from this direction, supported by an 8.8 cm anti-aircraft gun. In the late afternoon the corps orders for the withdrawal of the divisions now assembled in and around Gorschechnoye arrived. Behind parts of the 88th Infantry Division, which were supposed to push through in a south-westerly direction via Gerossimowo to Stari Oskol, the available part of the 323rd Infantry Division was divided up, but the 323 Ski Battalion had in its positions at the side of the 68th Infantry Division to remain with. Together with the majority of these units, it was also supposed to cover the passage of the 57th and 75th Infantry Divisions.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

The VII. AK took Gorshechnoye again on January 31st (68th, 323rd and 88th ID). All enemy attacks were repulsed. They pushed further south on the road to Stary Oskol. The 75th Infantry Division and Group Meerbach (I. / GR 217 and Pi.157) deployed on the eastern front returned as planned by January 30th. On January 31 the last withdrawing division had passed Kulevka. The groups of the K.Gr.S. could be go back to Gorshechnoye.

On January 31 the K.Gr.S. receives the order, with subordinate 68th Infantry Division, to go back to Gorshechnoye and cover the retreat of the other divisions. When assessing the situation, it was stated: Despite the extraordinary strain, our own troops have so far fought excellently and have not been confused by the enemy. In some cases, successful counterattacks and counterattacks prevented an overly stormy crowd.

The K.G.S. therefore made the decision: to delay the enemy's advance on Gorshechnoye in holding warfare and covered the marching of the divisions of the VII. AK. Command post of the K.Gr.S. in Gorshechnoye. 68th ID with subordinate GR 164, 591 and 217 defends Gorshechnoye and occupies a reception position northeast the city. The Combat group Krüger (Kdr. GR 202 with I. / GR 217, Pi.157 and other units) took over the protection of the eastern flank, going back to Gorshechnoye not before Feb 02, 1943. Since the sleighs and supply columns were jammed in Gorshechnoye in spite of all previous orders, all columns were again inspected for superfluous equipment and ruthlessly cleared by specially assigned officers.

In the night of February 1st appeared the General CO of the III. Hungarian Corps in Gorshechnoye and declared that in an order he had given everyone a free hand. Thick columns, mostly unarmed, followed the retreating German rearguards south. All enemy attacks are repulsed. On the night of 02/02, the Meerbach group went back to Gorshechnoye.

In the order to the VII.A.K. on 02.02. , thrown by airplanes, it says: Despite the fact that the troops have been overburdened so far, the overall situation requires immediate approach and marching through even during the night. The decision for the K.Gr.S. read: "Fight your way along the main winter road to Tim (Тим). Break through to the west in three groups in a row."

1st group: Start on February 3rd 3:00 a.m., with GR 164, I./ AR 157, 3. Pz.Jäg.Abt.157. (Leader Oberst Lenz)

2nd group: Start on February 3rd 7.30 p.m., with Ski.Batl.157, Pi.157, I./217, N.A.157, II./ AR 157 (Leader Gen. Lt. Siebert)

3rd group: Oberst Latz

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

Defensive fights in Woronesch and the Don 1943.

PAR 103 (4.Pz): On January 31, 1943, the II. Abteilung with the 5th, 6th and 8th batteries was unloaded at Shchigry and advanced with the Staff and the 8. Battery on February 1, 1943 to strengthen the advance detachment on the Tim. There, the 4. Battery is already firing at 1,800 m north at the enemy near Petrowka. On February 2, 1943, an attack on the advance detachment was repelled mainly by fire from the 4th Battery, III. Abteilung with batteries 5., 6. and 9., supported the attack of a Damerau Group from Shchigry to Nikitskoye. At night, II./ PAR 103 (4. and 8.) covered the retreat of the advance detachment / Mauss Battle Group towards the area 12 km west of Tim. In Shchigry in the afternoon the I. / PAR 103 arrives with the 2., 3. and 7. Batteries by train and the 1. Battery by land march.

Ski-Btl 323: Enemy pressure on the well-defended city increased on February 1. However, all attacks could be repulsed. In contrast, the GR 245 with its II. and III. Battalions broke into Stari Oskol. On February 2, the Ski Btl 323 changed position. He was now in the western part of the city and had to seize a group of houses west of the main road to Gerossimowo - Stari Oskol to intercept enemy attacks on the track. On February 2, the Commanding General decided to use the parts of the 68th Infantry Division that were within his reach in the area to form the head of another group of advance towards the northwest in the direction of Tim by "Klyuch - Troitskoye - Repjewka "and begin the attack on February 3 at 06:00 ours.

GR 530 (ID 299): In the whirlwind of the completely confused situation, there was no arrest there either. The battalion had been crushed. On February 2, 1943, the remnants of I. / GR 530 and III./ GR 135 (45. ID) armed a strong Combat Group "Heidvogel" in one company strenght.

In the 2nd Army, the VII. AK linked up with 26. ID at Oskol, where the Army Corps expressed its intention to continue fighting northwest towards Tim. The attempt by the enemy to cross the Tim at Tscheremissinowo was thwarted.
