Hello to all
The 3. / Pz Abt. 40 in the struggles for Uhtua / Kálevala.
Uhtua in the foreground (July 26 - December 31, 1941).
For German tanks and vehicles, an isolated road was built near the CP of the 3rd Division. It was important that the Finns communicate with the northern neighbors and then with the Uhtua-Röhö-Kiestingen detour. Building a passable road was a difficult and dangerous task due to the proximity of the Soviet forces and the continuous harassment caused by them. Two battalions of fortress construction formed by Finnish civilians were organized to build this road. The small German tanks Panzer I, which had orders to protect the workers, often rejected effectively the Soviet enemies.
Approximately 20 km from the division commando, in Kiestingen, was the town of Röhö, which consisted of about ten houses. The location of the town was very important, since its owner also dominated the link between Uhtua and Kiestingen. Röhö was also the base of the camp of the German armored. The circumstances of the autumn were difficult, and during the month, three German tanks lost their combat capability. Even the enemy's mines had already done their work before that.
The Soviet Rifle Regiment 337, which had a special training, unexpectedly attacked on November 2, 1941 Röhö, Uhtua and in the command zone of the 3rd Finnish Division. The purpose of the enemy was to destroy the Röhö base and divide the 3rd Division into Juntusranta on the Finnish side. Fierce clashes followed, but the enemy attempt failed. Especially in Röhö, the fire support of two small Panzer I tanks destroyed the best teams of the Soviet battalion until the last man, when the second wave of the attackers launched the assault. Towards the area where the command of the 3rd Division was deployed attacked the Rifle Reg 337, which was stopped by an intense cannon fire and machine gun from the German tanks. The fight was won, although marginally.
All Panzer I - III armor were technically sensitive to cold weather conditions on the northern front. When the Pz III arrived at Röhö on November 3, which had a superior performance, they crushed the defense of the Soviet troops and advanced across the river to the other side without going through the bridge. The batteries were wet and the electric switches on the barrel did not work. Of course, the batteries were replaced later.
