Hello pals :D; a little story dealing with one gebirgsjäger at Dobrostany, he was Leutnant Frobenius.................

Leutnant Frobenius

Those weren’t only clouds, which were flowed, together ascended smoke columns over the area of Grodek-Jagiellonski – Dobrostany – Hartfeld – Sadowa-Wisnia, where since three days a embittered battle was in course.

The Division of Munich drove the remnants of the Polish divisions back, those that had advanced fiercely against a SS-Standarte at Jawarow. However, the forest gave the poles the possibility to gather their striking force again and again so they could press against the, under extreme strain, gebirgsjägers deployed at Grodek and Dobrostany.

Our bombers attacked the enemy rear disturbing them so they shifted the efforts northwards on the wooded land of Janow-Jaryna. But the barriers held – our casualties weren’t small however – among others the Division’s Staff lost Leutnant Frobenius, an editor of a Munich newspaper, which fell at Dobrostany. Leutnant von Weizenbeck was severely wounded.

“I have a especial task”, said to us Leutnant Frobenius full of joy. At 01:00 o’clock (17 Sep 1939) he drove away in the night wit his special job towards Dobrostany. His departure was in good mood. Now, he followed his father, who fell in 1914, into the soldier’s death; a granade’s splinter struck through his steel helmet.

The bold part from Leixner is very interesting because according to a reliable Polish source Germans were attacking Polish positions there during that particular combat (on 17.09.1939), Poles only successfully counterattacked in the forest and repulsed German attacks.

More about the combat at Dobrostany during which Frobenius was KIA:

"I./98. Res.Inf.Rgt. of major Marek was deployed on defensive positions near Kertyna (2nd company of cpt. Juliusz Peyser) and Wola Dobrostanska (1st company of cpt. Wladyslaw Dumnicki). Around 10:00 AM on 17.09.1939 it encountered German motorcyclists from Kampfgruppe "Pemsel" from 1st Gebirgs Division, who attacked from the direction of Dobrostany. Soon after destroying these motorcyclists, the whole Group "Pemsel" with artillery came, and started strong assaults on Polish positions, which were repulsed by Poles with use of AT gun fire, mortar fire and MG fire after fierce combats which lasted until around 14:00 in the afternoon. The enemy who managed to enter into the gap between the improvised collective regiment of lt. col. W. Zietkiewicz and the right wing 2nd company of I./98. Res.Inf.Rgt under command of cpt. J. Peyser, attacking the rears of the Polish battalion, was repulsed by 3rd company of 98. Res.Inf.Rgt under command of res. lt. Kot, which had been kept in reserve until that moment. 3rd company of lt. Kot repulsed the German assault in the forest combat with use of a lot of hand grenades and bayonets. During these combats I./98. Res.Inf.Rgt. suffered quite heavy casualties in men - mainly due to German artillery fire (2nd company suffered the biggest casualties) - and also in equipment. The I./98 battalion lost 11 KIA and over 20 WIA, including seriously wounded commander of 1st MG company lt. Kunicki. Equipment casualties were: one mortar, 5 MGs and 1 AT gun. All buildings of the village Kertyna were burnt or destroyed by artillery fire. German casualties were also heavy, but are hard to establish. It is only known, that Leutnant Frobenius was KIA and Leutnant Weizenbeck was seriously WIA."

PS:

What was that "special task" / "special job" of Leutnant Frobenius?

Hello to all :D; another point of view................................................

Night combat of Muzylowice 15/16 of September of 1939.

In the second half of September 1939, three Polish infantry divisions, 11 Mountain, 24 and 38 Reserve, under the command of General Kazimierz Sosnkowski marched from Przemysl to Lwów / Lviv. After intense battles the Polish divisions are very bled, they lacked ammunition and the soldiers were exhausted, nevertheless the hope of defeating the invaders and marching towards their home garrison gave them strength.

On 15 September in the town of Sądowa Wisznia a meeting of the commanders of the Southern Front units was held. After presenting the situation reports, General Sosnkowski informed the participants of the very serious situation on the Polish-German front and presented three courses of action to follow:

1) march on Lwów / Lviv,

2) march north in the direction of Jaworow to link with the Army "Krakow"

3) March south to the Dniester.

After listening the proposals of those present and as there was no unanimity, the general made his decision, and added: We are going to Lwów / Lviv through the forests of Janov. The 11. KDP and the 38. DPRz would attack on two main columns that would have to take control of the western edge of Janów Forest. The 24. DP, was to follow the first successful division. The Kampfgruppe "Utz" of 1. GD and SS "Germania" Motorized Regiment blocked the road to Lwów / Lviv. In Muzylowice was the Command and the III. Battalion of SS "Germania" and III./ AR 109 (without the battery of guns of 10 cm K18 but with a battery of 88 cm).

Night attack with bayonet.

In the right wing of the 11th KDP was attacking the 49th Hucul Infantry Regiment, whose most intense fighting was to come. The first target was the town of Mogiła, which was traversed by the 1st Battalion of the 49th Infantry Regiment of Major Eugeniusz Lityński. The enemy, surprised by the sudden attack, recoiled in panic. At that time, one of the companies, along with the 1st Battalion of the 98th Infantry Regiment of the 38th Division took part in fierce battles in the town of Czarnokońce. In the area there were elements of SS "Germania".

After midnight, the 49th Infantry Regiment attacked Mużyłowice with its 1st Battalion from the south, and with the 3rd Battalion from the west. A gap in the deployment of the enemy was pointed out by the local priest P. Stanisław Capecki. German troops belonging to the SS "Germania" Motorized Regiment, which defended the town, were destroyed and only a few soldiers managed to escape, but were again attacked by the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion of the 49th Infantry Regiment. In Mużylowice, considerable quantities of combat equipment were captured, which was destroyed by the 11th KDP sappers. The losses of the 49th Infantry Regiment in deaths and injuries were significant and now impossible to estimate.

The Colonel (Pułkownik) Prugar-Ketling recalled: the shooters of the 49th burst into the center of the village stabbing anyone who was on hand. There were no shouts. The fight took place in the darkness and a sinister silence. Nobody was driving them, nobody asked for forgiveness. The feeling was astounding. That is why the threat the Germans felt must have surpassed all their past experiences. With such a surprise and such an attack they never faced before. The bodies we saw later were horrible. The fear they felt did not disappear from their faces after they died ................ As we entered the first buildings the dawn began to appear. A large and rich village with large gardens and courtyards was full of abandoned military equipment ...................

The SS-Obersturmbannführer Heinrich Koeppen (Commander) and 22 men of the III. / SS Germania perished in the action.
