Hello to all
; something more ..........
The conquest of Grudziadz/Graudenz - From 01 till 04 Sep 1939.
Fall Weiss. 02 Sep 1939
On Sep 02 1939 at 06:00 o’clock the IR 3 should begin its attack heading eastwards (towards Orla) on the enemy’s flank. Due to the dense fog, the assault’s time was shifted again and again; it began finally at 09:00 hours being successful however. The 21 ID’s mass jumped off at 10:00 hours heading west but was halted due to heavy enemy fire. Nevertheless, the new X-time did not reach the I./ IR 24 so its attack went under way at 08:00 hours and without artillery support it could seize the center and the cemetery of Kgl. Dombrowken; however due to own artillery fire within the village, the battalion should leave the town which was finally taken afterwards.
In the afternoon, the IR 24 moved further ahead in the direction of the Pfaffenberg. With tank and aerial support it could break into the enemy positions at Grabowitz and Ellernitz. The flank’s security were provided by the IR 3, the AA 21, the Pz Abw Abt 21 and parts of the Pi Btl 21 covering towards south and southwest. These forces could reject several raids accomplished by a weak enemy during the night as well as one powerful polish counterattack on Nitzwalde next day (II./ 65 pp reinforced with artillery).
On Sept 02 of 1939, the II. /AR 57 got across the Ossa River at noon. During afternoon fired on Graudenz and the Fort of Courbiere.
After violent combats the 16 DP was compelled to retreat on the heights that dominate the railroad Grudziazdz - Brodnica. In the evening General Boltuc ordered the Commander of the 4 DP to reject the enemy of the Ossa River while the 16 DP and the 14 pp had to solidly maintain the railroad. But the Commander of the 16 DP did not manage to control itself and ordered the withdrawal of his division and the 14 pp to Radzyn. The counterattack was delayed and began just at dusk. The Germans were rejected from the railroad but they stayed to the south of the river.
The Genral Boltuc decided then:
To stop the retreat of the 16 DP.
To dismiss the Commander of the 4 DP (plk Switalski by plk Szyszko-Bohusz).
To continue the counterattack on the following day
