Czech 4.7cm AT gun (PanzerJaeger I)

Post by big_buddha » Wed Mar 26, 2003 12:56 am

Hello,

does anyone have any info about the Czech 4.7m Anti-tank gun that the Germans used with the Panzer I chassis to create the Panzerjaeger I?

I've read that it was the most effective AT gun the Germans had during Barbarossa, is this correct? Could this weapon destroy T-34 and was it more effective (higher muzzle velocity?) than 50mm German guns mounted in Panzer III? (Both types, L/48 and L/60)

Hello to all :D; taking advantage of this old thread.................

The 4,7-cm-Pak(t) (4,7 cm Pak (t) (Sfl) auf Panzerkampfwagen I, Ausführung B (Panzerjäger 1).

The first self-propelled gun on the chassis of the Panzer I was the self-propelled gun with 4,7 cm Pak (t) (4.7 cm Pak (t) (Sfl) on Panzerkampfwagen I, Type B (tank destroyer 1). Through Alkett in Berlin were converted 202 of these vehicles. The vehicle had 2,250 mm of height, weighed 6.4 tonnes and had a crew of three men. The 4.7-cm Pak (t) had a lateral aiming field of 10 ° and an elevation field of -8° to +17.5 °. It had a 14.5 mm armor protection front and sides, its back was open. It carried 86 rounds of ammunition for the gun. The maximum firing range was of 6,000 m.

Hi all,

To return to the question of the original post, comparative analysis of both the 4.7cm Czech AT gun and the 5.0cm guns mounted on the Panzer III. If anyone is still following given the delay from the original post

PanzerJaeger I
4.7cm L/43 Pak(t) firing Pzgr36(t) penetrates 48mm at 500m Muzzle velocity 782m/s

Panzer III G/H/J
5.0cm L/42 Kwk38 firing Pzgr39 penetrates 46mm at 500m Muzzle velocity 685m/s

Panzer III J/L/M
5.0cm L/60 Kwk39 firing Pzgr39 penetrates 57mm at 500m Muzzle velocity 835m/s

T-34 Model1940 Armour Turret front & sides - 45mm, Hull front & sides - 45mm
T-34 Model1941 Armour Turret front & sides - 52mm, Hull front & sides - 45mm

It is clear that at typical combat ranges on the Eastern Front, 400-600m that both the 4.7cm Pak(t) and 5.0cm Kwk38 & Kwk39 firing Pzgr36(t) & Pzgr39 could penetrate all aspects of the T-34 Model1940 employed on the Eastern Front during 1941, but would have to close the range for the Model1941. The Germans could significantly boost their chances of a kill with the employment of the special Pzgr40 AP round with the Tungsten carbide core. The muzzle velocity is greatly increased thereby delivering more destructive power and would have little difficulty in penetrating the armour of both the Model1940 & Model1941 from all aspects. However I'm not sure how common the Pzgr40 round was during the opening year on the Eastern front.

To take the analysis a little further;

T-34 Model 1940
7.62cm L/30.5 L-11 firing BR-350 APHE penetrates 62mm at 500m Muzzle velocity 612m/s

T-34 Model 1941
7.62cm L/42.5 F-34 firing BR-350 APHE penetrates 69mm at 500m Muzzle velocity 655m/s

PanzerJaeger I Armour Turret front & sides - 14.5mm, Hull front & sides - 13mm

Panzer III G/H/J Armour Turret front & sides - 30mm, Hull front & sides - 30-60mm

Panzer III L/M Armour Turret front - 57mm,Turret sides - 30mm, Hull front - 50mm, Hull sides - 30mm.

Regards

David

Hello to all :D; more..............................

The Panzerjäger I in action. The 4,7 cm PaK(t) auf Panzerkampfwagen 35R(f) ohne Turm.

Some 843 R35s fell into German hands. A considerable number, 174 according to some sources, were converted into a 47 mm tank destroyer to replace the Panzerjäger I: the 4,7 cm PaK(t) auf Panzerkampfwagen 35R(f) ohne Turm. The vehicles were converted by Alkett between May to October 1941 to try and make an equivalent vehicle to the Panzerjäger I. The result was not as successful mainly due to the slow speed of the R 35 and the overloaded chassis. A few were deployed in Operation Barbarossa, most were deployed in occupied territories.

At the beginning of "Operation Barbarossa" on June 22, 1941, the Panzerjäger (Sfl) 4.7cm Pak (t) auf Pz Kw 35R (f) were distributed as follows:

Pz Jäg Abt 559: LVI AK (Mot) Army Group "North"

Pz Jäg Abt 561: IX. AK Army Group "Center"

Pz Jäg Abt 611: XXXXVII AK (Mot) of Army Group "Center"

On July 3, 1941, was received the order to fit out again all of them with German guns of 3.7 cm Pak.

According to the report prepared by the General Staff of the XXXXVII AK (Mot) of July 5, 1941, the commander of the Pz Jäg Abt 611, reported that the French chassis were completely out of service, and this already in the first days of the campaign due to technical failures.
