Use of Personal handguns by German Officers

Gentlemen,

I have a question about the use of privately owned handguns buy Officers in the German Army prior to and during WWII.

I have been told that there was a regulation requiring all officers to purchase a personal handgun. And that Officers were required to be armed at all times when in uniform. There were guidelines that outlined what models of handgun were acceptable.

When an officer was assigned to a particular unit he would be issued a handgun based upon his rank and duties. When he left the unit on leave, or when transferred to another unit he would return his issue handgun and carry his personal gun until such a time as he was issued another gun.

Is this an accurate description? Can anyone direct me to the specific regulations or guidelines that pertain to the ownership and use of personal handguns by German Officers?
