Rucksack

I have a German Rucksack and was wondering if anybody could answer a questions for me. As one is wearing the ruck, there is a ring on the right side, toward the bottom. There is only one ring, on that side only, none on the left. I was wondering what the ring was for. Thanks.

Most likely the other ring is missing (if it really is a German ruck). The rings were used with the y-straps; the parts that are attached to the front straps.
