Polizei battalions/regiments

Post by jmreynolds »

Towards the end of the war were the Polizei battalions absorbed by regular Heer/SS units?

A number of Police Regiments were used for military operations during the retreat in 1944 and 1945 but they remain police unit.
Someone serve to form the 35. SS-Polizeidivision, someone with Waffen SS divisions or corps and some others grouped into police battle groups
i.e.
SS-Pol.Rgt.1 went to 35.SS
SS-Pol.Rgt.2 served with XXXX Pz.Korps in 1945
SS-Pol.Rgt.3 served into Polizeigruppe Hannibal along VI A.K. end 1944...

Correct me if I am wrong but all Police Regiments came under the SS at some time and were given the prefix SS.

From 24 feb 1943 all pol rgt were renamed SS-Polizeiregiment. this assimilation into the SS was only at unit level. Individual police members didn't automatically become members of the SS.
They have to apply to join SS.
by decree of 29 march 1943, Police regiments numbered 31 and above were renamed "SS-Polizei Schutzen Regiment " because of their mix staff (german and foreign volunteers)
