Volksturm weapons

Post by Tegetdorff »

I am trying to detrmine the branch issue and possible date of an 1884 reichrevolver which has SS runes,(which have been authenticated). What was the VK armed with? Were the VK commanded by SS? Possibly,it is early pre war,as I have read that SS-VT and SS-TK were often given obsolete weapons as the Wehrmacht demanded ad received priority for the latest weapons, and also because the SS-VT and SS-TK had much tighter budgets early on

Volkssturm & SS; VS weapons

Post by WaPrüf2 »

The VS was technically under Himmler since it was a part of the Replacement Army. In combat situations it was subordinate to the local military commander.
While the use of Reichsrevolvers by the VS is entirely probable use (and marking) by the SS seems to me to be highly improbable.... In order to determine what unit your revolver was issued to you need to report unit stamps found on the backstrap (sometimes the front strap as well) or butt cap along with the manufacturer, and date. if any. For a good text on the VS see: Seidler, DEUTSCHER VOLKSSTURM (check: http://www.zvab.com)
For input from specialists in Reichsrevolvers other than myself see: http://www.gunboards.com: Jan Still's Luger Board: Reichsrevolvers.
Altho there were some special weapons produced for the VS their actual distribution and use seems to have been limited. The VS was armed either with standard German service weapons (especially the special deployment units) or with foreign weapons. Various versions of Italian rifles and carbines were quite common in the VS.
