Crazy Helmets...did they exist

Post by dylan »

I once read somewhere, but limited information about a Panzer division consisting entirley of men who had lost all their family in bombing raids and fanatical fighters who were nicknamed "crazy helmets" by the German soldiers.

They had nothing else to fight for as had lost family ,but to the death and in the field of battle where "crazy" when fighting.

Did they really exist or is it just a myth.

I recently viewed a documentary dealing with Operation Market Garden (of A Bridge too Far fame) on the Canadian History Channel. Reference to such units was mentioned. Supposedly such units coined the slogan "Enjoy the war while you can, the peace will be Hell!"

The Crazy Helmets did indeed exist however it was a derogatory term used by the soldiers to tell of the certain battalions which were entirely composed of men who had lost evrything. There were around 4 or 5 of these and i do believe that one company fought in Holland.
