Volkssturm Unit Naming

Post by protewas5x »

Dear Feldgrau family

I'm a new member from Indonesia. just join but I already follow the forum talks for about a year.
Reenactment activities are currently rising down here. And even some people start make gourp theme, one of my personal friend are trying PanzerLehr.

And by the way I'm interested in Militia, Homeguard, informal Auxiliaries sort of units in general on all sides. Currently I'm on interest with Volkssturm. I already knew basics info of them and I'm searching for administration info sort of thing now.

I just read :
- https://www.feldgrau.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34638
- https://forum.axishistory.com//viewtopic.php?t=192705

I myself plan and try to make my own group/unit about Volkssturm, I need help about how to read Volkssturm naming. like Volkssturm-Bataillon 2/88 what does the "2" and "88" stands for ?

I heard that Volkssturm in Squad and Company size had some combat leader from either regulars or paramilitary such SA, NSKK, etc. is it true ?

And also are there any Volkssturm that have some sort of parton name like in regulars (wehrmacht and SS) ?
ex. Panzer Grenadier Division Großdeutschland or 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler".

That's all for my question and wish me luck on this project

- Volksturmbataillon 2/88 indicate company 2 of the 88 bataillon.

- you have two type of volksturmbataillon :
- armed bataillons which poor equipment as well poor military value. tactically under miltary command with some times reserve officers with political background.
- arbeiter Volksturmbataillon (workers bataillons) which were used in festung area to dig "panzergraben" anti tanks ditch under political command (SA Wehrmannschaft, Kreisleiter...)

they were generally under orders of the festungkommandeur (fortress commander) for employment.
