Has anyone actually visted and/or OBTAINED any research material from archives in these 2 countries ? If so, what are their holdings compared to other institutions ?

This is a bit off topic but check http://www.stormbirds.com and then find lwag index box. Click this and go to the board. Here you will find a listing of countries archival sources. I haven't visted for awhile but I do think Poland and some of the ex Soviet block countries are listed. Of course this is primarily Luftwaffe related but might give you a base as to the difficulty of search....... ?
