Gille never seems to get mentioned?

I understand that General Gille was the most decorated Waffen SS officer of WWII yet he seems to not get the sort of adulation that Peiper or Meyer recieve, despite several distinguished actions. Why is that one wonders? In fact, I can't recall even seeing a photograph of him - anybody got one?

Here you go, Liam! And there's a short bio in the end of the link...

I agree with you that there's not much focus on Herbert-Otto Gille on the Internet and in Forums like this... That's rather strange when considering that he was a SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Waffen-SS and a Brilliantenträger! Not to mention a long time commander of one of the most famous SS Panzer Divisions...

Well, just start a thread! As you just have...

Gille however is also mentioned in the repro militaria site http://www.thirdreich.ca, which produces some portraits of him. Also Gille is mentioned in a famous book, the memoirs of Leon Degrelle, whom Gille fought alongside with at Cherkassy.

You can also find a good bio on him in English in "Waffen-SS Commanders, The Army Corps and Divisional Leaders of a Legend, volume 1, Augsberger - Kreutz" by Mark Yerger.

I remember reading the story of a Dutch volunteer: he wrote Gille was called 'Daddy Gille' by his men. Popular guy, I'd say.

Thanks again Helmut. He didn't remember the pics were that cheap. Maybe I order one, to scare my family in law! @{
