Also what may add to the mythos is the BILOM unit--people may hear about that and get confused.

Speaking of Bernard Fall - I recently read his classic on Dien Bien Phu, and remembering what this thread is about, I want to add that he did mention that the 2nd Parachute Battalion (Foreign Legion) did consist of many "ex- Nazis". Can't remember the page, sorry. It might even have been a footnote. That, of course, begs the question of whether those "ex Nazis" were Waffen SS or not. Unfortunately the author does not elaborate. Also, IIRC, the period of the war he was mentioning was before Dien Bien Phu and he quite goes out of his way to prove that the legionnaires that fought in that battle were for the most part not former SS men.
