SS topic of interest poll

Post by Mark C Yerger » Sun Sep 29, 2002 11:45 am

As a basis for other forum readers, we'd all be curious:

1) What are your 1 or 2 favorite units or non Waffen-SS topics with the SS as a whole ?

2) Who are your 1-2 favorite division or corps commanders ?

3) Who are your favorite 1 or 2 Knight's Cross holders ?

4) What Waffen-SS involved battle or campaign interests you most ?

5) Do we have any modelers or minature figure painters ?

1. The waffen ss units I find most interesting are Wiking and das Reich/ Götz von Berlichingen. Obscure units and foreign volounteers are also interesting.
2. Kurt Meyer and Willi Bittrich are fascinating characters
3. Emil Dürr & Rudolf Falkenhahn have interesting histories
4. Operation Cobra and Kursk, Kurland and Narwa are also interesting
5. 1/72 and some 1/35

1. Das Reich and Hohenstaufen,
2. Heinz Harmel and Sylvester Stadler,
3. So many great ones, but my favourite two: Teddy Telkamp and Simon Grascher,
4. Operations in Hungary in 1945 and Operation Bluecoat,
5. I haven't been modelling for about 10 years now, before that mainly 1/35 and figures.

To the modelers:

I admire the skill but don't have it. If anyone has painted any 1/54 scale figures of SS a photo would be of interest.

Hello Mark, Most interesting Division to me by far is Das Reich, because my great uncle served in it from 1940-1945. He 1st served with Kradshutzen battalion then Auksflarungabteilung (Recon) 2 when Kradshutzen was disbanded due to losses. Unfortunately he died in 1971 of cancer, so I could only get tidbits of info from his family regarding his service. But I have had in depth correspondence with 2 veterans of Das Reich who were good friends of my great uncle and they really raved about what a great guy he was and the type of guy you wanted around in a crisis. I also by luck have had numerous correspondence with knights cross winner Fritz Langanke and he has sent me numerous original color photos from recent reunions of living vets of Das Reich. Because of his openness and candor with any questions I asked him about the war, he clearly is my favorite Knights Cross winner. J. Buck

1) I have an interest in the Waffen-SS Foreign Legions (particularly the Eastern units), as well as the numerous anti-partisan units.

2) I wouldn't call them "favourites", but Dirlewanger and Kaminski are interesting characters.

3) Strange, I don't really have any. . .

4) Definitely the East Front, especially in the later war once Germany was on the defensive.

5) Have been building off and on for almost twenty years. Mostly into 1/48 scale WWII aircraft, though I do build some 1/72 scale kits, as well as the odd piece of 1/35 scale armor.

1. If I had to pick 2, I'd take Wiking and LSSAH.
2. Don't really have a favorite here, either, but I've recently been turned on to the Tychsen mystery, so there's a start.
3. Wittman comes to mind.
4. I prefer to learn about their adventures in Europe, mostly.
5. I've been out of the hobby for a while, but most of my modeling is 1/35 armor (lone vehicles and dioramas), with the occasional lone figure thrown in. Assuming I get the time to start building again, I'd have to find the time to learn to photo them properly. Too bad, I used to have an A-SS officer holding a propaganda poster that looked pretty cool!![/u][/i]

Hey, good questions!

Post by Wolfkin » Mon Sep 30, 2002 8:59 pm

Here are my answers:

1.) 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" and 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich".

2.) I usually concentrate on the lower levels such as Kompanie, Abteilung and Regiment. But, I do believe that Teddy Wisch and Kurt Meyer had interesting styles of command that spark an interest in me.

3.) Just two? Awww...do I have only two to choose from? Ok, if I have to choose only two then it would be Michael Wittmann, Helmut Wendorff, Heinz Kling, Jochen Peiper, Werner Poetschke, Max Wunsche...errr...sorry that was more than two. Make it Wittmann and Peiper. :D

4.) All the different Battles Of Kharkov, Kursk especially Prokhorovka, Normandy, Ardennes.

5.) Well, I tried but... :(

Cheers,

Wolfkin

Guess I should put my own

1) Das Reich and Polizei Division
2) Georg Keppler and Walter Krüger
3) Otto Weidinger, Otto Baum, Ernst Krag, Jakob Lobmeyer, Karl Ullrich, Paul Hausser (sorry, over 2)
4) Rshew and Kharkov
5) wish I had the skill but don't model, love to have some 54mm figures to display or a semui-tracked carrier in 1/35

Best
Mark
