Hello to all :D; a little more follows.................

The fate of the U-40.

Patrols against the Enemy. Second (and last) Patrol.

21 Sep 1939.

Kpl. Wolfgang Barten assumed command of U 40 replacing Kplt. v. Schmidt, who had to leave the submersible due sickness.

10 October 1939.

U 40 sailed to the area of operations (2nd operational patrol commanded by kplt. Wolfgang Barten). The ship was ordered to proceed through the Canal, but resume the route around the north of England if she found strong opposition. It was decided to adopt this course of action because the BdU had not solid data about the impracticality of the route and the boat had to take the shortest route to approach the Atlantic, as the U 40 had sailed with delay and the BdU wanted to hve enough submersibles in the area of Gibraltar.

13 October 1939.

U 40 collided with a British sea mine and sank nearly 47 meters deep. The submersible had four days at sea. On this day also was sunk another submersible of Hundius U-Flotilla, U 42.

The fate of the U-40.

Patrols against the Enemy. Second (and last) Patrol.

October 14, 1939.

The U 40 who had sailed on October 10 has not been reported yet. She had verbal orders to do so. She has not went through the channel and therefore she must be delayed.

Actually the U 40 had hit a mine and had sunk on October 13, 1939 in position 50.41,6N - 00.15,1E,. 45 crewmembers perished aboard, surviving only three of them.

Nine crewmen escaped through the hatchway and rose to the surface; one died in the rise and five after that due to exposure to the harsh sea conditions. Nearly 10 hours after the sinking the three survivors were rescued by the HMS Boreas.

The fate of the U-40.

Patrols against the Enemy. Second (and last) Patrol.

October 19, 1939

Still no information about the U 40. This, together with intelligence reports of October 14 of about 4 sunken submersibles, one of them by the French, increase the assumption that both the U 12 and U 40 are lost in the Canal.

November 13, 1939.

The U 40 has been declared lost on the day of the date. There are definite news that one of the crew members is a prisoner of war. It must be assumed that the sub was lost in the channel and that have not been heard from passing therethrough.

Emblems.

By the outbreak of war, instead of the number, the boat carried two different tower emblems:

1.) A skull and crossbones, and

2) an umbrella in a circle.

Hello to all :D; a little more.................

Sinking of U 40.

U 40 - English Channel - the U-boat was sunk by the impact of a mine (BF 3238). PQ: BF 3238. U 40 hits a British sea mine and sinks to a depth of about 150 feet. Nine survivors make it to the surface of the water. In the ten hours that followed before they were rescued by a British ship, six more died of hypothermia, as the water temperature hovered around six degrees. U 40 traversed the channel so that she could participate in the pack's operation in the ATLANTIC in due course. The submersible was at sea for four days.
