Aircraft vs U boats.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; browsing the web I stumbled upon this old article ........................................ .

Encounter between a Liberator and a U boot.

The meeting was not friendly and ended with the sinking of the submarine; despite several attempts I could not identify her. The photos were taken from the window of the bomber's waist gun.

Any idea? TIA. Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello Raul,
No idea, because Liberators were also used as anti-submarine patrol aircraft by RAF Coastal Command and Liberators were credited in full or in part with sinking 93 U-boats
Maybe it's an PB4Y "Privateer" (navalized Liberator) who sunk this U-Boot???
Possible it's the U-404 sunk on the 28th of july 1943 who sunk after an attack made by a B-24 Liberator but I am not sure at all.
Kindly regards
Prosper

Hello to all :D; a complement about the sinking of U 604..................................................

Meeting Point U 172 with U 185.

Shortly after U-Emmermann's arrival, a Liberator dived from the clouds in a surprise attack and she had to execute an alarm dive leaving the damaged U 604 and U 185 on the surface. Maus set out to rendezvous with U 172 again, to transfer half the crew of U 604....on 14 or 15 August, the two submersibles rendezvoused around noon. Twenty-three crew members from U 604 were transferred to U 172. Among them was the Eng. Officer, with the war diary, and an officer from the Propaganda Company (PK). Only U 172 would return home.

Hello to all :D; a complement.............................

Sabotage in South Africa - U 200.

U 200 was a U-boat Type IX D2 that was commissioned on December 22, 1942 under Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Georg Schonder (1910 - 1943). Previously, Schonder had been in command of U 77 (Type VII C) from 18.01.1941 to 09.07.1942. After a period of tests and training, U 200, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Schonder, left Kiel on June 12, 1943. After crossing the Baltic, refueling and receiving new orders in Marviken, the submersible operated in the North Atlantic and southwest of Iceland. She belonged to the Monsun submarine group. The U 200 had on board Küstenjäger men from the Brandenburg command (seven men) who were to carry out commando and sabotage operations in South Africa. Later the boat should proceed to East Asia. After 12 days, U 200 was sunk by British aircraft.

U 200 was sunk on June 24, 1943 in the North Atlantic southwest of Iceland by depth charges from Liberator H of Squadron 120 RAF. As the "Liberator" began to attack, she was met with intense anti-aircraft fire. This strong anti-aircraft fire from the submarine hit the machine in the left wing, in the wing tank, hydraulics and fuselage. Only two of the four depth charges were activated. However, they detonated near the submarine. During the second attack, the depth charge release mechanism failed, probably due to flak. But U 200 was already so damaged that she sank. Remains and an oil stain were observed in which some 15 survivors were swimming. However, none of them was rescued.

Also on board were: WO Oblt.z.S. Rolf Losche; WO Oblt.z.S Arnold Olischläger; WO Lt.z.S. Helmut Schultze-Hartung; LI Kkapt.ing Otto Sonntag; Lt.ing.d.R Karl-Eugen Rees; OStrm Jakob Berg; Lt. Hans Brügmann Heer/Brandenburger; Mar.St.Arzt Dr Dieter Herbig.

Regarding the sabotage operation in South Africa, were there other attempts? Cheers. Raúl M 8).
