Hello to all :D; a little to share...................................

Norway 1945.

The U boat was U 870 (Type IXC/40) coming back to Kristiansand from her First and only operational patrol (Nov 10, 1944 - Feb 02, 1945 - 101 days at sea); the boat operated in the North Atlantic and west of Gibraltar. It was able to sink on this enterprise 1 merchant ship with 4,637 GRT and 2 warships with 1,825 ts and damage 1 merchant ship with 7.207 GRT and 1 war ship with 1,400 ts............................

After attacking a small group of landing ships on 20 December 1944, the U-boat was then attacked by a British aircraft from No. 220 Squadron RAF but got away, and also evading two hunter-killer groups of vessels. For that reason the extensive damages seen in the photos below................

Hello to all :D; a question .....................

Return of U 128 to Lorient.

2nd Patrol - U 128, under the command of Kplt. Ulrich Heyse, left Lorient on January 8, 1942. The submersible operated in Vizcaya in the Azores, Bermuda, off Florida, the Bahamas and in the North Atlantic. She was able to sink 3 ships for 27,311 GRT on this patrol. After 74 days and having covered some 9,900 nm, U 128 returned to Lorient on March 23, 1942.

However, on the back of the photo (below) it says 22-III-1942. What was the return date?

The full text reads: "Einfahrt des OT Patenboot(??) am 22. III. 42 Lorient "Unser Empfangskuss" ("Entry of the godfather ship OT (??) on 22. III. 42 Lorient "Our welcome kiss")

OT Patenboot... godfather makes sense... So U 128 sponsored a OT group?

Hello to all :D; a little more...................................

Ausräumen!

In the context of the U-Bootwaffe (U-Boat Branch), the order given as "Boot ausräumen" can be translated as "clear the boat", i.e. remove all mobile equipment after a patrol to facilitate work in the shipyard. Was there a normal procedure established (a list of items to be withdrawn)? The question arose when I saw the photo below..................

U 409 back to Brest.

The images below show U 409 (Type VII C) returning to port after finishing her patrol, BTW the access cover to the gyro casing has been removed, part of the "Boot ausräumen" in preparation for an overhaul in dry dock?............

Hello to all :D; a little more...................................

U 753 at La Pallice.

U 753, under Korvettenkapitän Alfred Manhardt von Mannstein, sailed from La Pallice on April 22, 1942. The submersible operated in the North Atlantic, off Cape Hatteras, in the Straits of Florida, in the Greater Antilles, off Yucatan and in the Eastern Caribbean. She was supplied on May 5, 1942 by U 459 with 20 m³ of fuel, 1 m³ of lubricating oil and 1,500 kg of food, and on June 16, 1942, again by U 459, with 8 m³ of fuel and food. During this operation, U 753 sank 2 ships with a total of 13,769 GRT and damaged 2 ships with a total of 6,908 GRT. After 64 days and having covered 10,627 nm, U 753 returned to La Pallice on June 25, 1942.

Sunk and damaged (d.) were:

05/20/1942 - American GEORGE CALVERT 7,191 GRT
05/22/1942 - British EP TERIAULT 326 GRT (d.)
05/25/1942 - Norwegian HAAKON HAUAN 6,582 GRT (d.)
05/27/1942 - Norwegian HAMLET 6,578 GRT

Conclusion of the commander of the Submarine Force:

With a little more luck, the success of this patrol could have been greater in relation to the traffic found. The behavior of the crew after the heavy air attack was good (U 753 was attacked by a Whitley bomber in the Bay of Biscay which damaged the sub on 23 June.

Hello to all :D; more.....................

U 74 at Bergen.

U 74, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat, left Kiel on February 22, 1941. After the march through the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, the submersible moved to Heligoland and from there to Bergen. On February 27, 1941, the U-74 arrived in Bergen, where the last individual training and the incorporation of equipment took place........I calculate that the photos show this navigation, since it was the only time that this submersible was there.
