Post by tigre » Sat Apr 16, 2016 1:16 pm

Hello to all :D; a new topic.......................................

Operations of U Boats Type II at the beginning of the WWII.

From the beginning to the end of 1940. Organization and mobilization.

On the occasion of the plans against Poland (Fall Weiss) Kap.z.S. Dönitz took over as FdU-Ost with his HQ in Swinemünde, while Kpt.z.S. Ibbeken took over as FdU-West. To fulfill functions of observation and security in the North Sea, a large number of submersibles Type II of the 1st and 3rd U-Flotilla were placed under the orders of FdU-West (U 9, 12, 13, 15, 16, 19 , 20, 21, 23 and 24, as well as school submersibles U-1, 3 and 4. In order to carry out this task they moved from Kiel to Wilhelmshaven.

Therefore available to operate in the Baltic were the following Type II A/B: U 5, 6, 7, 14, 18 and 22. Of these, U 14, 18 and 22 sailed on August 22 to Memel to carry out the operation "Transportübung Lübeck". While the submersibles Type IIC of the new 5th U-Flotilla (U 56, 57, 58 and 59) would carry out the "Unternehmen Gustav" occupying positions along the Polish coast.

However on August 31, 1939 Dönitz moved his HQ to Wilhelmshaven and assumed as FdU-West, the new FdU-Ost was FKpt. Schomburg.

Hello to all :D; a little more.......................................

Operations of U Boats Type II at the beginning of the WWII.

From the beginning to the end of 1940.

Mine-laying campaign.

Given its low speed, autonomy and little armament, the 250 ton submersible were not suitables for war against the maritime traffic nor taking prizes. Therefore these ships had as its primary mission the mine-laying of the east coast of England. Each of them could carry in each of its torpedos tube three ground mines TMB (2.3 meters long, 533 mm caliber, weight 750 kg, including 550 kg of explosives and magnetic activation), ie each submersible type II could carry a maximum of 9 TMB mines.

Since the beginning of the conflict until February 9, 1940, the U boats Type II sank 27 merchant ships with mines, totaling 74,497 Tons; they also damaged the cruiser HMS Belfast and several merchant. The boats that carried out the campaign were: U 9, U 13 (x2), U 15 (x2), U 16 (x2), U 17, U 19 (x2), U 20, U 21 , U 22, U 23, U 24, U 56, U 57, U 58, U 59, U 60 and U 61.

(X2) two missions.

Campaign on the south coast of Norway.

In the period between September 15 and October 4, 1939 the U 3, U 4, U 7 and U 16 carried out a campaign against mrítimo traffic according to the rules of dam on the south coast of Norway, sinking eight merchant ships with a total of 15,383 tons.

Hello to all :D; a little more.......................................

Operations of U Boats Type II at the beginning of the WWII.

From the beginning to the end of 1940.

From October to the end of 1939.

After completing their successful patrols in the Baltic Sea and North Sea the U boats U 1 to U 7 returned to the U Boat School in Neustadt; U 8 was assigned to the Anti-Submarine School in Gotenhafen and several submarines Type II (U 9, U 14, U 17 and U 18) were allocated from October to the end of 1939 to the new and recently organized Training Flotilla (Ausbildung) in Danzig.

On October 17, 1939 a new reorganization took place in the structure of the Submarine Force, Karl Dönitz (promoted to Rear Admiral from October 1) took over as Commander of the Submarine Force (BdU). Operations of U Boats Type II at the beginning of the WWII.

From the beginning to the end of 1940.

Early 1940.

After the extension of the war zone, also was increased in equal measure the success of the U boats Type II in front of the British east coast and in the Hoofden, particularly the U 9 (Lüth), U 13 (Schulte), U 14 (Wohlfahrt), U 18 (Mengensen), U 19 (Schepke), U 20 (Moehle), U 21 (Stiebler), U 22 (Jenisch), U 23 (Kretschmer), U 57 (Korth), U 58 (Kuppisch), U 59 (Jürst) and U 61 (Oesten). So in the period from 06 January to 11 February 1940 they sank 26 merchant ships with a total of 61,951 tons, in addition to the destroyer HMS Exmouth (by U 22).

For Operation "Nordmark" the incursion of the battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst, with the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper and the destroyers Wolfgang Zenker, Wilhelm Heidkamp and Karl Galster in order to intercept British convoys between Bergen and the Shetlands, the U boats U 9, 14, 22, 23, 57, 61 and 63, occupied security positions between 18 and 20 February 1940. While the raid was unsuccessful, the U boats sank 10 merchant ships totaling 31,604 tons, in addition to the destroyer HMS Daring (by U 23).

Early 1940.

In other actions in front Cross Sand and the Hoofden, between February and March, the U 10, U 14, U 17 and U 20 sank a total of 10 merchant ships by 22,812 tons. Also a major operation of U boats Type II against a concentration of hostile submarines in the North Sea, detected by the B-Dienst, resulted in a huge failure. Between 14 and 29 March 1940 operated unsuccessfully in the North Sea the following boats: U 7, U 9, U 19, U 20, U 23, U 24, U 56, U 57 and U 59 and so did the U 1, U 2, U 3 and U 4 in front of the south coast of Norway. However, the U 19 and U 57 sank five merchant ships for a total of 11,259 tons operating in front of the British east coast.
