The German S-Boote in the Black Sea 1942-43.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; a little on this topic.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

Transfer.

The first units to be transferred to the Black Sea were: S 26 (Kptlt. Fimmen), S 27 (Oblt.z.S. Büchting), S 28 (Oblt.z.S. Künzel), S 40 (Kptlt. Schneider, K.), S 72 (Oblt.z.S. Schneider, W.) and S 102 (Kptlt. Töniges).

The boats were cut above the main deck and all the equipment removed. Then the boats were towed upriver by the Elbe to Dresden, there were loaded on special trucks and transported overland to Ingolstadt, from there again towed by the river Danube to Linz. Here parts of the equipment were installed (which in the meantime were transported by rail). Then were towed to Galati, where the main engines were installed. Then the boats moved on their own to Constance, where the rest of the planned equipment was installed.

The first two boats, the S 26 and S 28, arrived in Constance on May 24, 1942.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations.

On June 2, 1942 the boats carried out the first mission, but it had to be canceled due to engine failure. On June 3, 1942 the S 72 and the S 102 boats arrived in Constanta, while the S 26 and the S 28 operated against Cape Chersonese without finding opponents.

On June 6, 1942 the first Rotte (two boats) operated against Sebastopol without encountering maritime traffic. The second Rotte conducted search and rescue of the crew of a reconnaissance seaplane which crashed into the sea.

On June 10, 1942 the 1st Fast Boat Flotilla (1 SFltl) carried out a mission in the northern Black Sea without encountering hostile traffic. On the way back the S 26 caught fire and had to return to Linz for repairs.

On June 12, 1942 the rest of the flotilla moved to Ak Mečet on the west coast of the Crimea. From there, carried out attacks against Soviet traffic. The S 102, was successful and sank the steamer "Bialystok" (2,048 tons) sailing as part of a convoy. In all other operations until the end of the month the opponents succeeded in avoiding the torpedoes, which were clearly identified by the bright phosphorescence of the sea surface and the bubbles of the torpedoes.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations.

In the night from 02 to 03 July 1942, during a skirmish with three Soviet gunboats MO 24 type, armed with cannons of 4.5 cm and machine guns, were sunk the SKA 0112 and 0124, but the S 40 received a heavy impact in the port torpedo tube. The following explosion of the air cylinder caused severe damage, so the ship had to be repaired at a shipyard and was out of service for a long time.

The commander (Oblt.z.S. Schneider-Pungs since July 01, 1942) and nine men were wounded. In the S 28, a man was killed. The German S-boats rescued from the water 37 survivors of the two soviet vessels, including Major General Petr Georgevič Nowikov, former commander of the 109th Rifle Division and second in command in Sebastopol, and carried them to Yalta.

On July 3, 1942 fell the fortress of Sevastopol. 1st Flotilla was deployed with four boats to Iwan Baba, the new base in southern side of the Crimea peninsula shortly before Cape Kik Atlama.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations.

Kptlt. Stuhr-Christiansen took over as Commander of the 1st SFltl. In August and early September, the flotilla could report 23 successful sinkings (freighters, tankers and barges). On September 5, 1942 the S 27 was hit by a defective torpedo of S 72 and sank. As a result 12 dead, three seriously wounded and three slightly wounded were recorded.

As the boats S 28, S 72 and S 102 were in shipyard in Constanta, only remained in the area of operations two boats, S 26 and S 49 recently coming from the shipyard.

Unsuccessfully air raid of Soviet planes on Iwan Baba. The S 26 and S 49, reported a total of three ships sunk in two nights. A surface attack of Soviet gun-boats against Iwan Baba was rejected due to the strong defensive fire.

On September 30, 1942 both ships went to Constanta for engine overhauls. The S 26, S 28, S 49 and S 102 returned to Iwan Baba in order to continue the attack on the Soviet maritime traffic in late October, but with very limited success.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations.

Due to a period of bad weather the first action of the month took place only on November 5, 1942 and in the same all torpedoes fired against a steamer which had been sighted failed. Then again bad weather prevented the use of the S boats until November 21. The first ice formations in the North Black Sea limited the subsequent attacks.

Until late 1942, the flotilla did not sight any target for any attack, on the other hand it was far from reaching the authorized strength of 10 units.

Two Soviet boats which were captured as booty by the 1st Flotilla (TKA-47 on the Baltic Sea and TKA-111 aground in Yevpatoria and recovered) of 17.8 t displacement (Length 19.1 m, beam 3.3 m , depth 1.2 m) armed with 2 x 53.3 cm torpedo tubes and 1 x 12.7 mm machine gun and two engines GAM 34 BSF Otto cycle of about 800-850 CV could sail up to about 50 knots, but quickly showed serious problems of corrosion.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations - 1943.

The first task of the year was to carry out missions as outposts, as the army feared a hostile landing in the area of Feodosia. Until January 27, 1943 these insertions were marked by bad weather. The ice in the Strait of Kerch also imposed a restriction on the freedom of maneuver in operations. At that time the 1st Flotilla had three speedboats: the S 26, S 51, S 102. The boats that came sailing along the Danube: the S 40 and S 52 also had problems with the ice and were delayed.

On February 4, 1943 took place the dreaded Soviet landing in Novorossiysk. Due to fierce defensive fire only part of the landing troops could reach the beach and was finally rejected on February 06, 1943. A secondary landing at Cape Myšako succeeded and until February 9, 1943 managed to put ashore there about 17,000 men.

The three boats of the 1st Flotilla were the only units that could muster the Navy. Most operations were unsuccessful because they were not able to detect targets or torpedos failure. On February 16, 1943 also the S 26 collided with wooden beams and had to return to Constance.

Bad weather hampered operations of the 1st Flotilla until February 27, 1943, when again some sinkings could be reported, a torpedo boat, two steamers (4,700 ton) and a coaster. In fact were the minesweeper "Gruz" (Fugas class of 441 t), the gunboat "Krasnaya Gruzija" (1,100 t) and coastal ship "Racija".

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations - 1943.

By March 1, 1943, the 1st Flotilla (KKpt Stuhr-Christiansen) had on hand the S 26 (Kptlt. Fimmen), S 28 (Oblt.z.S. Künzel), S 47 (Oblt.z.S. Schlenzka), S 51 (Kptlt. Büchting), S 72 (Oblt.z.S. Schneider, W.), S 102 (Lt.z.S. Lutherer). The S 40 and S 52 were released from the Danube ice in Braila. The S 42, S 45 and S 46 were on their way to Linz for repairs.

In mid-April, almost all operations were unsuccessful because the Soviets did sail their supply transport almost exclusively in daylight. Only two small coastal vessels were sank.

On April 18, 1943 the 1st Flotilla moved with five boats, along with seven boats of the Italian flotilla to Anapa to fight from there the supplies to the beachhead at Cape Myšako. Until the end of April each night the boats conducted patrols and had several skirmishes with Soviet guard ships, during those meetings were sunk the patrol boats "MK-054" and "MK-058", the landing piers were bombed and badly damaged and several coastal vessels were sunk.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations - 1943.

During May, the S-boats were in action almost every night, but without finding targets. However they managed to sink the schooner "Ilič", four coastal fishing vessels with a total of 2,200 tons, two barges for 900 tons and the tug "CF-6 Pervans". In most actions were clashes with Soviet guard ships without any particular success. Several of the ships were illuminated by the searchlights and received fire from the batteries located on the shore. On the morning of May 20, 1943 returning boats were constantly attacked by Soviet aircraft and as a result the S 49 and S 72 were damaged and had to be reported as out of service (AKB - außer Kriegsbereitschaft).

On 20 May 1943, the Italian flotilla in Feodosia passed into German hands. They received the name of 11. SFltl (Kptlt. Meyer, H. J.). Subordinate to the flotilla were:

1. Gruppe: S 503 (ex MAS 568) Oblt.z.S. Wülfing; S 502 (ex MAS 567) StObStrm. Maniel; S 505 (ex MAS 570) ObStrm. Svoboda; S 506 (ex MAS 574) ObStrm. Gurke; 2.Gruppe: S 504 (ex MAS 569) Oblt.z.S. Schay; S 501 (ex MAS 566) StObStrm. Wernicke; S 507 (ex MAS 575) StObStrm. Koplin. The S 506 was badly damaged by a bomb.

During June, the 11th Flotilla carried out reconnaissance missions. During an anti-submarine mission they were engaged in combat with four Soviet gunboats, but despite the superiority in artillery and firepower of the opponent, the German boats could escape.

Meanwhile the 1st Flotilla operated almost every night against the coast of the Caucasus; during an action occurred on June 9 four boats launched their torpedoes into the Bay of Cape Myšaki destroying a coastal vessel (400 tons) and a light boat (300 tons), in addition to the docks.

During the night of 28 to 29 June the 1st Flotilla launched mines in the Bay of Gelenčik. The boats were illuminated by searchlights from the ground and attacked by aircrafts, but they were not damaged.

Hello to all :D; a little more.........................

German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations - 1943.

On September 9, 1943 the Red Army landed in the city of Novorossiysk. Six days later, the city had to be evacuated. On September 11, 1943 while returning, the boats of the 1st Flotilla were attacked by Soviet fighter-bombers. Despite the defensive fire, they carried out the attack at low altitude using their weapons. In the S 46 all guns were out of service and the port torpedo tube exploded shattering the bow. Despite the ongoing attacks, the S 49 came to evacuate both, the seriously wounded and the fallen. The S 46 was sunk by a torpedo.

Bad weather or moonlight prevented raids on successive nights. The 1st and 11th Flotillas again carried out tasks as advanced post because the army feared a landing in its back. The boats sailed south of Anapa in search tasks during the retreat of the city on September 21, 1943.

On September 28, 1943 four boats of the 1st Flotilla attacked boats in the dock of Anapa. In the action there were damaged two minesweepers, a motor boat and a patrol boat.

On September 30, 1943 it was dissolved the 11th Flotilla and with its personnel organized the 24th Flotilla in the Aegean which was to operate with captured Italian speedboats. The S 501, S 506 and S 507 joined the 1st Flotilla.

On October 5, 1943 the boats S 501, S 506 and S 507 were out of service in Feodosia. These boats were sent to Nikolaev, where the S 505 also was out of service, the other boats proceeded to Linz.

On the night of 0ctober 5/6, 1943 there was a raid by three Soviet destroyers off the southern coast of Crimea and against the German evacuation transports. The boats S 28, S 42 and S 45 attacked and prevented the attack on the Germans maritime routes of communicationshese but at the expense of an impact on the S 45. The Luftwaffe came to the rescue with four waves of attack and destroyed those three Soviet destroyers.

Towards the end of the evacuation of the Kuban bridgehead on October 9, 1943 the Axis had managed to transport 239,669 soldiers, 16,311 wounded, 27,456 civilians and 115,477 tons of supplies, 21,232 Vehicles, 27,741 horse-drawn vehicles, 74 tanks, 1,815 guns, 74,657 horses and 6,255 cattle. German S-boats in the Black Sea.

In operations - 1943.

In the first half of November, there were several skirmishes with Soviet units. During the night from November 3 to 4, 1943 the TK-101 exploded after receiving a direct impact, while the TK-81 managed to escape. In the night from November 7 to 8, 1943 the 1st Flotilla sank three patrol boats, four minesweepers and four other vessels, including patrol vessel 0122 with the squadron leader aboard. On November 11, 1943 the Flotilla ship sank a motor gunboat with the impact of one torpedo.

In mid-November were in service in Iwan Baba the following S-boats: S 26, S 28, S 42, S 45, S 47, S 49, S 51 and S 72. The S 40 was still in the shipyard after the collision with the R33, the announced reinforcement of six boats from the country was delayed, S 131, S 149 and S 148 were in the stands between October and November. The boats were not ready to operate until April 1, 1945.

In the second half of November, continued the operation against the Soviet beachhead in Kerstch. There was a skirmish with Soviet speedboats TK-76, TK-86 and TK-104 on November 17 1943. The TK-76 did not return to port, the other two were damaged. On November 21 1943 the flotilla burned two landing crafts and rejected eight more eastward, so they could not land their cargo.
