German U Boats Type IA.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; just a little contibution on this subject...................

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

Single hull seagoing boat with large side ballast tanks. Developed right from the Turkish Gür (former Spanish E1 - 1932 built in Spain by a German design), this type served as a model for the development of the later type IX. Both boats of this series were lost in the first months of the war.

On December 17, 1934 shipyard DESCHIMAG AG WESER in BREMEN obtained contracts in order to build both submersibles type IA, called U 25 and U 26 with work's numbers 903 and 904 respectively. In mid-1935, more precisely on June 28, was laid the keel of the first of the series U 25, which was the first submarine to be built by the shipyard. While the U 26 keel was laid on August 1, 1935.

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

Operations during the Spanish Civil War.

On July 14, 1937 the U 25 (Korv Kpt Eberhardt Godt; IWO Oblt. z. S. Fritz Frauenheim) sailed from Kiel to carry out her second navigation towards the Spanish coast and also sailed from Wilhelmshaven the U 26 (Krv Kp Werner Hartmann; IWO Oblt z. S. Günther Prien) to carry out her first and only patrol to Spanish waters. Both submersibles performed maritime surveillance tasks on the occasion of the civil war in Spain. This navigation ended on August 29, 1937 when both submersibles returned to Wilhelmshaven.

The U 26 conducted patrolling off the Spanish coast between Pesajas and Cape Finisterre and only occasionally a column of smoke was visible on the horizon. On one occasion off Bilbao the German submersible had a close encounter with two national vessels, the Cruiser "Admiral Cervera" and Destroyer "Belastro" both warships recognized the U 26 about a mile and a half and changed their course.

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

On January 3, 1938 kplt. Werner v. Schmidt took over command of the U 25 and on April 28, 1938 the submersible sailed with her new commander from Wilhelmshaven to her third patrol towars Spanish waters; the U 25 returned to the same German port on June 08, 1938. The IWO was Oblt. z. S. Kurt von Gossler (sunk with U 49 as kaleun).

The U 25 sailed again from Wilhelmshaven for the fourth patrol in Spanish waters on 05/06 September 1938 (it depends on the source) under the command of kplt. Werner v. Schmidt and returned on October 22, 1938. This was the last cruise of this type for this submersible and the IWO was kplt. Otto Schuhart (famous as commander of U 29), who took over command of U 25 on December 10 of that year.

Hello to all ; more dealing with the SCW...................

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

Operations during the Spanish Civil War.

War Commands in the peace

Meanwhile on June 15, 1937 a new incident had caught the minds in Germany: front of the Algerian coast, 25 miles north of Oran, the German light cruiser Leipzig was attacked by four torpedoes, but all missed the target.

Rear Admiral Fischel, at the time the local naval commander, prepared a new secret submarine action.

Before crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, the U 28, U 33 and U 34 painted over the numbers and neutrality characters. regarding the large type IA U 25, there is a photo, where she is supplied offshore Costa del Sol from a Heinkel aboard the cruiser Leipzig in front of Alicante.

Any idea about that picture. Has anyone ever seen that picture? Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello to all :D; a peculiarity in this type of submersible ............................

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

Scheme in the scuppers for free circulation of water in the bow in the Type IA (U 26).

Obviously the same happened with the U 25, the first boat of this type.

Hello to all :D; more follows...................

The U Boats Type IA of the U Flotille "Saltzwedel".

In war operations. Deployment!

In a report prior to the war, dating from August 21, 1939 the BdU's War Log specified that a total of 35 submarines were in service and ready to operate, detailing that until August 30, eight other would be available including the U 26 (from noon on August 26). However on August 22 the BdU's War Log mentions that the U 26 will begin working with her new commander (kplt. Klaus Ewerth) from August 23.

On August 25 the OKM via telephone instructed to use the U 26 (together with U 53) in order to lay mines TMB against ports of embarkation of British troops. Provisional orders were issued thereon. The subject was discussed on August 26 and it was decided that only the U 26 would be used for mine laying operations. To do so, after being repaired a leak in one of the tanks and being fitted out, the submersible would sail according to Atlantic Operations Order No. 4 with the task of: laying mines off the Spithead Roads, the Needles, Portland, Plymouth or in the Bristol Channel. The place of laying would be decided later.
