U Boat Type VIIA - Conning tower's evolution.

Below you can see the original model of the conning tower belonging to the Type VIIA, without anti-aircraft weapon nor spray deflector. BTW the AA gun of 20mm is placed on the upper deck behind the conning tower.

The second picture (pre-war) shows three submersibles Type VIIA (U-Flotille "Saltzwedel") with the original conning tower.

Second configuration in the U30 (right) without breakwaters nor vent, but with the anti-aircraft gun on a platform at the conning tower; to the left the U 29 with standard configuration.

I've seen this kind conning tower only in the U 30.

U Boat Type VIIA - Conning tower's evolution.

Finally I've found this last configuration for the U-30 and others Type VIIA. The conning tower with breakwaters, vents (to port) and its anti-aircraft gun on a platform at the conning tower.

Lorient 1940.

Another twist to the matter; in the photo we see (I believe) the U 30 (Type VII A) by the dock and moored in row, U 99 (Type VII B). Apparently the photo was taken in port on August 5, 1940, when the U 99 returned from her 3rd patrol (she sank four ships and damaged another three - see pennants with the horseshoe) and the U 30 was preparing to sail (she would do it at 21:00 hours) for her 7th patrol (see box with supplies on deck).
