German Naval Bases in France.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; something that might be of interest ...........

Kriegsmarine Naval Bases in France.

The first plan of the Kriegsmarine High Command decided that Brest would be a first-order Naval Base. As naval bases of second order for light surface forces were intended the ports of Cherbourg (up to destroyers) and Boulogne (S-Boote). Le Havre and Saint-Malo were intended as a naval bases of third-order for light surface forces up to destroyers.

On the Atlantic coast were also provided as naval bases of second-order, Saint Nazaire and Lorient; the first port for naval forces of all types and the second for submersibles (Lorient in turn was envisioned as a naval base of third-order for surface forces until light cruisers). Further south were provided the ports of La Rochelle-Rochefort and Bayonne as operational naval bases for light surface forces (Torpedo boats and destroyers); in turn on the Quiberon Peninsula was established an anchorage for naval forces of all types.

Hello to all :D; a little complement......................................

Allied Bombing of the French Ports, 1942-1943!

The allied forces were powerless to exercise proper control over the vast western European coast from Narvik to the Bay of Biscay. Unable to impose an effective blockade of the German submarines operating from French ports, during the period from 1942 to 1943 they used air raids on the ports of Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Pallice and to a lesser extent against Brest and Bordeaux. Most of Lorient and St. Nazaire were destroyed in the process, in a deliberate attempt to reduce the u boats activities.
