At the shipyard - Building a U Boat.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; another topic......................

Construction phase of the U 120 and the U 121. A little history.

On August 28, 1937, the shipyard Flender Werke AG in Lübeck received the contract to build the submersibles Type IIB U 120 and U 121. The construction will be carried out on behalf of the company HAPRO which wanted to export both ships to China after its completion.

On March 31, 1938 were laid down the keels of U 120 and U 121 with the hull number # 268 # and # 269 #.

Hello to all :D; something more......................

Launching the U 1, first U Boat Type IIA - DEUTSCHEN WERKE KIEL on Jun 15, 1935.

This ship was originally ordered on February 02 and her keel was laid on February 11, 1935, with the Baunummer # 236 #. As we can see, with these submersible it was possible to use cranes in order to lower them in the water ..............

Hello to all :D; sailing in the web I came across these pictures ...........

Building the U Boot Baunummer 326.

I've checked on multiple sites dealing with German U-boats in WWII and I found that this work corresponded to U 326, ordered in the Shipyard Flender Werke AG, Lübeck on April 2, 1942 . If so, this was a submersible type VIIC/41 with a modified bow called " Atlantic ". In this particular type the equipment used on board were changed for new models more compact and lightweight, because of this it was possible to lighten the weight of the submarine in 11.5 tons. Taking advantage of this it was decided to build the pressurized hull with a steel whose thickness would be 21 mm instead of the previous of 18 mm. This increased her operating depth to 180 meters and the depth of collapse till 300 meters. To reduce friction, the bow was redesigned and lengthened about 13 cms creating the so-called Atlantic bow. The production of this series did not generate any revolution as the shipyard should build the VII C using the new materials and equipment specified. The first of this type of submersibles entered service by 1943.

In the photos we see the ship shortly before being launched.

Is it really a VIIC/41 type and the U 326? TIA. Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Hello to all :D ; a query..........................

In the shipyard - Construction / Overhauling.

AFAIK the photo shows a U Boat Type VII A (I think) with the original model of conning tower. Surely it is in a shipyard in the final phase of construction or being overhauled (I do not know). What about the kind of shed built on her side?....................

Tigre,

Perhaps shed is to hide welding activity going on after dark?
Thanks for all sharing all your pictures, Tigre.

Hello to all :D; a query..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939).

For reasons of camouflage, the new German U boats were designated as as motor test boats or Motorenversuchboote (MVB). The Type II was derived of the German-designed coastal U boat "Vesikko", built for Finland between 1931 and 1933, as well as the German U boats of World War I UB II of 1915 and UF of 1918.

As early as 1932, the firm Deutsche Werke Kiel AG was selected to build the first boats of the modern U boat force of the Kriegsmarine. To this end, a contract was signed with the shipyard in January 1934. Due to the secrecy still maintained over this operation, the small U boats Type II A were to be built in specially covered assembly halls. Towards the end of 1934, when the works of three assembly halls were completed and the material for the construction of the submersibles was available in the shipyard, the work order arrived for the assembly of the first six U boats Type II A on February 2, 1935. The submersibles in question were from U 1 to U 6 (all of them entered into service during the year 1935).

In the construction of the six U boats Type II A only intervened a shipyard, the Deutsche Werke Kiel AG. The next batch of U boats were Type II B.

Hello to all :D; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type II B.

When the first official contract for the construction of six Type II B U boats with Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel, was signed on July 20, 1934, they were to be built in the sector (Helligen) I and II. For reasons of secrecy in the concentration of construction material, the assembly of these submersibles did not begin until March 1935. These submarines were from U 7 to U 12 (all entered service in 1935). Also on February 2, 1935 Germaniawerft received an additional order for the construction of 8 other submarines of the same type, these were from U 17 to U 24 (the first entered service at the end of 1935 and the rest in 1936).

At the same time as the Deutsche Werke Kiel AG shipyard received the construction order for the assembly of the first 6 type II A U boats on February 2, 1935, it was also ordered to build another 4 U boats, but type II B, these were from U 13 to U 16 (the first entered service in late 1935 and the rest in 1936).

Even before the outbreak of war, the shipyard Flender Werft Lübeck participated in the submarine construction program for the Z plan. In addition, the shipyard built in 1937/1938 a pressure dock for submarines. The export company "Hapro" has signed an agreement with China for the construction of submarines. Originally, the construction of two small and three medium-sized submersibles, of which only the two smaller ones were built, U 120 and U 121 (ordered September 28, 1937), that were taken and put In service by the Kriegsmarine in 1940.

Type II B was a single pressurized hull coastal submersible with a quick immersion dome inside. These small boats were strong and maneuverable.

In the construction of the Type II B U boats, three shipyards took part, Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel (14 units), Deutsche Werke Kiel AG (4 units) and Flender Werke AG, Lübeck (2 units).
