Hello to all ; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type I A.

Going back a little bit with the Type (from II to I) but chronologically following the evolution in time, here appears another great shipyard that had active participation in the reconstruction of the submarine force. The participation of the shipyard Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen in the construction of U boats began in 1934 with an order of two Type I A submarines; these boats were U 25 and U 26 (ordered on December 17, 1934, were commisioned during 1936). However, the originally planned construction of additional submarines of this type, was canceled because Dönitz selected as the backbone of his force the smaller Type VII.

Also from the German Naval Command was selected the shipyard Vulkan Vegesack Werft, Bremen as another of the shipyards for the new U boat Branch. At first, in the years 1934/1935, the monthly construction of a Type I A submersible was planned, but then, in 1936, the construction program was changed to one or two U boats per month of Type VII.

The Type I A was a single-hull deep-sea submersible with large ballast tanks at each side. Derived directly from the Turkish U boat Gür (Ex Spanish E1, built in 1932 in Spain with a German design). This type then served as a model for the development of the U boat Type IX.

In the construction of the U boats Type I A, intervened a single shipyard, Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen (2 units). The batch of submersibles of this type planned to be built by the shipyard Vulkan Vegesack Werft, Bremen, was canceled.

Hello to all :D; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type VII A.

As already mentioned, the originally planned construction of additional Type IA submarines was canceled in favor of the smaller Type VII, so that on April 1, 1935 the shipyard Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen received the order for building six units of that type; These U boats were U 27 to U 32 (the first were commissioned in 1936 and the last in 1937).

Also on March 25, 1935 the shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel was engaged to build four other units of Type VII A; These were from U 33 to U 36 (all were commissioned during 1936).

In these ships, the objective was to maximize its strength, sea resistance, surface and immersion maneuverability, speed (surface and immersion), autonomy, number of torpedoes, construction speed and easy maintenance. All of the above was achieved, even with small dimensions and little displacement, but without giving up quality in favor of the offensive and constructive characteristics. The result was a submersible of only 915 tons of displacement in the surface and 64.50 meters in length. But the ship combined a marked degree of offensive power and was able to sail out of the coastal waters. The characteristics of Type VII were not exceptional in themselves, but their well-balanced features and high performance made it a formidable weapon of war and one of the most successful types ever built.

The first version of type VII (A) was characterized by carrying a single torpedo launch tube aft, located outside the pressure hull. This arrangement did not allow recharging during navigation.

In total, ten units of Type VII A were built and two shipyards, Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen (6 units) and Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel (4 units) participated in the construction of this U boat type.

Hello to all :D; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type IX A.

At the same time, the Type IX A, which replaced the Type I A, entered series production at the shipyard Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen. On July 29, 1936 four units of this type were ordered, from U 37 to U 40, and on November 21, 1936, were ordered four more from U 41 to U 44. In order to achieve the construction of the hull in the shortest possible time, the construction in sections, which was later taken by the other shipyards for the type VII C series production, had been introduced into the shipyard specifically for the production of the Type IX. The first three U boats Type IX A entered service in 1938 (U 37, 38 and 39) and the last five entered service the following year, 1939 (U 40, 41, 42, 43 and 44). The U 43 was the last to be commissioned before the war (August 26, 1939), while U 44 entered service only on November 4, 1939.

The Type IX was a double-hull ocean-going U boat, the design of which was derived from the U 81-U 86 series of 1916, which in many aspects resembled the Type IA design of 1936. Comparing with the Type VII, which was almost contemporary, the Type IX had a greater displacement, more habitability and, above all, a greater range of action, since it was designed for operations far from its base of operations. By design, the two types differed completely. Instead of the individual hull with ballast tanks as the Type VII, this design had double hull. This was mainly to achieve better surface navigability. In addition, part of the fuel was stored in the space between both hulls. In this double hull were also located all the ballast tanks. In the upper deck was mounted a 10.5 cm L / 45 gun and a Flak 2 cm gun, the latter on a platform behind the conning tower.

In the construction of the U boats Type IX A, intervened a single shipyard, Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen (8 units).

Hello to all :D; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type IvS.

In addition to the U boats for the German Navy (Kriegsmarine), the shipyard Krupp Germania Werft, Kiel built two submarines to export to Turkey. On June 25, 1936, it was received an order for the construction of two Type IvS U boats (Batiray, Saldiray). The contract was signed by the Deputy Minister of Defense General Kazım Özalp for the Turkish side and by Ferro A.G steel and N.V. Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw for the German side.

The IvS Type was a larger and improved design from the earlier E-1 design built in Spain. It was faster thanks to more modern machinery and had greater range. In particular the Batiray was a mine-laying submersible with five launching tubes placed on each side in the main ballast tank. She was still in the trials phase when the war broke out and was seized by Germany. After passing to the U-Bootwaffe the mine tubes were converted into fuel tanks.

In total, 4 IvS units were built; Two of them were built in Germany (Saldiray and Batiray), and two in Turkey (Atilay and Yildiray). In the construction of the two submersibles of this type made in Germany, only Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel (2 units) intervened. The "Batiray" was taken over by the Kriegsmarine and was put into service on September 12, 1939, as U-A.

Hello to all :D; more..........................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type VII B.

As the Type VII A were commissioned, measures were taken to optimize the performance of the boat, resulting in the Type VII B. Thus, on November 21, 1936, the shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel received the order for the construction of seven units of the mentioned type; These U boats were from U 45 to U 51 (U 45, 46, 47 and 51 entered service in 1938 and U 48, 49 and 50 in 1939). On May 15, 1937, the same shipyard received the order for another two units, U 52 and U 53, and on July 16 of that year, U 54 and U 55 were ordered (All commissioned during 1939). At the end of the year, on December 12, 1937, the last four were ordered, from U 99 to U 102 (all entered service in 1940).

Likewise and as a result of the agreement reached on April 28, 1938 to increase the number of German submarines to 100% of British tonnage, on June 2, 1938 the shipyard Vulkan Vegesack Werft, Bremen received an order to build four U boats of the Type VII B; These went from U 73 to U 76 (all entered service in 1940). In general, the construction of 10 submarines of this type had been planned, but finally the remaining 6 were constructed in January of 1939 as Type VII C.

Within the framework of the same program, on June 9, 1938, the shipyard Flender Werke AG, Lübeck was commissioned to construct four other units of Type VII B; These were from U 83 to U 86, instead of the 500-ton export submarine, a fifth unit of the same type VII B was ordered in 1939, the U 87 (all of them entered service during the year 1941) .

This variant was derived directly from its predecessor, the Type VII A. As a result of the more powerful diesel engines and greater fuel capacity, the dimensions and displacement increased slightly. The stern launcher tube was now housed inside the pressure hull and the reserve torpedoes were increased to 14.

In total, 24 units of the Type VII B were built, and in the construction of this type were involved three shipyards: Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel (15 units), the shipyard Vulkan Vegesack Werft, Bremen (4 units) and the shipyard Flender Werke AG, Lübeck (5 units).

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type II C.

However, although during the following years, the construction of surface warships predominated in the Deutsche Werke Kiel AG shipyard, in June and July 1937, were ordered eight U boats Type II C in the aforementioned shipyard. The boats in question were from U 56 to U 59, ordered on June 17, 1937 and U 60 to U 63, ordered on July 21, 1937 (of them two, U 56 and 57, were commissioned during the year 1938, five in 1939 and the last one, the U 63, in 1940).

Type II C was a longer version of the previous type (II B) with two other compartments inserted in the center to accommodate improved facilities of the radio room and a second periscope. Additional fuel tanks below the control room were further enlarged, extending the range to 1,900 nautical miles at 12 knots.

In the construction of the eight Type II C submersibles, intervened a single shipyard, the Deutsche Werke Kiel AG.

Hello to all :D; Something else before the war ...........................................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type VII C.

The first units of the new Type VII, the Type VII C variant were ordered to Krupp Germaniawerft shipyard, Kiel, already on May 30, 1938 according to the new Anglo-German naval agreement of 1935; These were from U 93 to 98 and U 69 and 70 (all entered service during 1940). Subsequently, on January 25, 1939, it was received a new order for two other units, U 71 and 72 (the first was commissioned in late 1940 and the second in early 1941). In addition the on June 06, 1939 were ordered three Type VII C more, works numbers from 620 to 622 however this was annulled on September 19, 1940.

The shipyard Vulkan Vegesack Werft, Bremen received on January 25, 1939, the commission to build six units of the Type VII C, from U 77 to 82 (all entered into service during 1941) and on August 7, 1939 were ordered the U 132 to 136 (entered in service in 1941).

Also on January 25, 1939, the shipyard Flender Werke AG, Lübeck was commissioned to build five Type VII C units, these were from U 88 to 92 (the first three entered service in 1941 and the remaining two in 1942).

That is to say that at the beginning of the hostilities had been ordered 20 U botas Type VII C, being put the keel of the first unit (U-93) on September 09, 1939.

As a result, of a larger carrying capacity, the VIIC variant possessed a slightly larger displacement than the VIIB variant.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type IX B.

However, a year before and almost at the same time as the Type II C also entered the scene the ocean-going U boats Type IX B. On July 16, 1937 were ordered two units of this type, U 64 and U 65 and on December 15, 1937, three others were ordered, from U 122 to U 124 (former U 66 to U 68). On May 24, 1938 eight more units were ordered, from U 103 to 110 and finally on August 08, 1938 the U 111. The first of this type, U 64 entered service at the end of 1939 and the others throughout the year 1940.

This variant was practically identical to the previous one, but with a slight increase in the capacity of fuel to 165 t, which increased its autonomy to around 2000 nautical miles. At the shipyard's proposal the height of the upper deck was increased because installing and accommodating the internal components with the level of the deck previously existing, caused structural difficulties. From the outside, Type IX B differed from Type IX at the location of the bow gun, which was now located closer to the conning tower.

In total, fourteen Type IX B units were built and a single shipyard, Deschimag AG Weser, Bremen, took part in the construction.

Hello to all :D; more...........................................

German shipyards and the evolution of the U-bootwaffe (1932-1939). Type X B.

Even before the hostilities began, the double-hulled oceanic U boats Type X B came to light. These were units for mine-laying beyond the coastal waters, derived from the Type X A, which was not built but with influences of the Types I A and IX A. On January 31, 1939, the shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel got the order to build three units, these were from U 116 to 118 (commissioned in 1941) and on August 7, 1939, with war Fledged, another unit was ordered, the U 119 (in service in 1942). Later the same shipyard built four other units of the same type (U 219, 220, 233 and 234, which entered service between 1942 and 1944).

The mine launching device (designed specifically to carry the Schachtmine A - SMA moored mines) consisted of 6 vertical shafts (3 mines each) to the bow and 12 shafts (2 mines each) in both bands To the center of the ship. Most of the backup torpedoes were stored in the space between the deck and the pressurized hull. In 1943, the cannon was removed from deck, and the antiaircraft armament was reinforced with two other 2 cm guns. Often, these submersibles were used as "milk cows".

In total eight units of Type X B were built and in the construction of this type of intervened a single shipyard, the Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel.
