MEAL ON A U-BOAT (Unterseeboot Nahrung)

Post by meckanic »

Was war eine übliche Mittagessenmahlzeit auf einem Unterseeboot?

Meals varied as to quality with time spent at sea. Hot meals were mostly boiled veggies and meat, often in same pot which was carried to "mess" and served. There was no mess hall for crew, they ate where they slept.
Cold meals, when conditions required, could be simply meat and bread or bread and jam. In Herbert Werner's Iron Coffins they refer to victory sandwiches of moldy bread and rancid jam, yum yum!

Hello to all :D; a small complement ..................

Provisions aboard a U Boat.

Food conditions on board U-Boats seem on the whole to be exceedingly good. Translation of a document captured from "U 70" showing the menu for 42 days is given in Appendix I. Survivors from "U 100," which had also come from Germany, stated that the food supplied to U-boats was of the very best. Fresh fruit, oranges, lemons and apples were liberally supplied for the crew. n the other hand a medical report on the survivors of "U 99," which had come from Lorient and had been at sea for 24 days when she was sunk, indicated that the food was not so good as in the other two U-Boats. Hence the quality deteriorated fast toward the end of patrol.....................

Breakfast: Coffee, cocoa or soup, jam or butter or honey and an egg on dam and.

Start:
Day 1 Liver, cabbage, potatoes, fruit
One kipper, liver sausage, butter, bread, coffee.
Day 2 Black or liver sausage, sour cabbage, mashed potatoes, fruit
Sandwiches, butter, bread, tea.

Middle:
Day 20 Macaroni and bacon, stewed fruit
Matties herrings, bacon fat, potatoes in their jackets, dripping, bread tea.
Day 21 Beans, mutton, fruit
Sausage, Emmentaler cheese, butter, bread, coffee.

End:
Day 40 Cooked bacon, French beans, potatoes, compote.
Day 41 Vegetable curry, one pickled cucumber, potatoes, stewed fruit.
Day 42 Cabbage with beef, compote.
