Hello everyone; something about............................

Aufklärungsverbände der Luftwaffe - Reconnaissance units of the German Air Force

Long-range reconnaissance.

The long-range reconnaissance aircraft were among the air units that penetrated the enemy's airspace up to the maximum range limit. They carried out, mainly with support of aerial photographs, operational reconnaissance for High Commands, tactical reconnaissance for medium commands and intelligence on the target for attack units. They were assigned, mostly at squadron level (12 aircraft) to the command posts. In 1939 the tactical numbering of the Luftwaffe reconnaissance units was numbered in three digits and lasted until the end of the war. The second number meant long-range reconnaissance. The third number 1 - 4 was the number of the Luftflotte (air fleet), within which the unit operated (the Luftwaffe Command in East Prussia (Ostpreußen) wore the "0"). The first number 1 meant that it was the first group of its kind in the air fleet.

Thus the Aufklärungsgruppe 120 was organized on November 1, 1938 in Neuhausen with a single squadron without unit command. Location in 1939 Neuhausen near Königsberg / East Prussia. During the White Case in 1939, the group flew over northern Poland to the Luftwaffenkommando Ostpreußen (East Prussian Air Force Command) equipped with Do-17. Staka (Staffelkapitän) Major Anton Schub.

Hello everyone; something about............................

Aufklärungsverbände der Luftwaffe - Reconnaissance units of the German Air Force

Close reconnaissance (Nahaufklärer).

Aerial reconnaissance for the command of the army was to provide information on the terrain, displacements and distribution of enemy forces, on the preparation, development and completion of combat activities, movements and situation behind enemy lines such as marches and resupply of the enemy forces. For operational reconnaissance, the Army Groups, the armies and later the armored groups each had a reconnaissance squadron (F) composed of 12 aircraft, for tactical and combat reconnaissance, the armored divisions and corps had a squadron of reconnaissance (H) each of 12 aircraft and 3 liaison planes tactically subordinated - due to the lack of reconnaissance aircrafts, by 1941, the number of aircrafts had to be reduced to 6. For army groups, armies and more later armored groups were established the air force commanders - Kommandeure der Luftwaffe (Koluft), for the armored corps since 1940 the air group leader - Gruppenführer der Flieger (Grufl.).

The Koluft staff was dissolved at the end of 1941/42. As a rule, squadrons F and H were grouped into close and long reconnaissance groups (NAG and FAG). The long-range reconnaissance aviation received its operational orders from the Luftwaffe, the results of the reconnaissance were sent by the Ic / Lw to the army. The Nahaufklärer received instructions on cooperation with the corps and armored divisions.

The air units planned to cooperate with the army had double-digit numerals, because the groups (for tactical reasons) consisted of F and H squadrons. For example, Reconnaissance Group 41, meant the Fourth Army Reconnaissance Group in the area of the Air fleet 1.

From 1939 to 1941, the Panzer divisions had subordinate tactical squadrons (Pz.). From 1943, the conversion to single-seat reconnaissance aircraft was gradually carried out. For this purpose, the squadrons - as the war situation evolved - were withdrawn and placed under the same group. Like a single-seater, they were called 1.-3. / 12th. As there were still old squadrons, which still flew with Hs 126 or Fw 189, these were called 11./12. and 12./12.

The strength of a squadron H was approximately 20 Officers (including 1 doctor), 340 NCOs and enlisted men, plus 64 motor vehicles. The squadrons F had more personnel. As of 1942, only flight personnel and senior technical personnel remained in the squadrons.

Hello to all :D; something more............................

Aufklärungsverbände der Luftwaffe - Reconnaissance units of the German Air Force

Maritime reconnaissance (Seeaufklärer).

Air reconnaissance for naval warfare had as its mission to control the vastness of the maritime area, the enemy coastal waters and the ports. It should provide information about the opponent's movements and probable intentions. Large areas of the sea were explored by several aircraft. Sweeping the sector in a fan. If an enemy naval unit or a convoy was detected, it was reported by radio. The reconnaissance aircraft remained in the area until the enemy was attacked by its own air or naval force or until another reconnaissance aircraft took charge of tracking it. Often armed reconnaissance was used. The enemy detected was attacked with weapons and bombs on board, and then also with torpedoes.

In 1939 the Küstenfliegergruppen (coastal air groups) flying in the interest of the Navy carried three-digit numbers. The third digit 6 came from the previous Luftkreis VI (Maritime). The first digit was the group number (1 - 9). The number "0" was chosen in the center because the groups were composed of squadrons of different types, so they were not uniform. After the subsequent name change in maritime reconnaissance groups the numbering of 125-132 was a continuation of the existing groups (F) 120-124.

Aufklärungsverbände der Luftwaffe - Reconnaissance units of the German Air Force

Long-range reconnaissance - 3. (F) / Aufklärungsgruppe 22

The 3rd Squadron was established on October 1, 1937 in Prenzlau from 3. / Aufklärungsgruppe 122 and renamed on November 1, 1938 as 3. / Aufklärungsgruppe 121. On the same day, the squadron was newly created in Kassel-Rothwesten from the 3. / Aufklärungsgruppe 24 and was equipped with the Do 17 F. In 1939, the squadron flew reconnaissance missions for the 7th Army over France. At the beginning of 1940, the squadron was reconverted to operate with the Do 17 P and the Do 17 M, a Kette (formation of three aircraft) of Bf-109 was received for close reconnaissance (Nahaufklärung). During the Western campaign, the group flew reconnaissance missions for the 16th Army. After the capitulation of France, the squadron moved to the south of France and flew missions from here on the Mediterranean. In April 1941 it was deployed during the Balkan campaign and since June 1941 in Russia. Here he flew reconnaissance missions for the 16th Army in northern Russia. Before the start of the campaign he received the Ju-88. The squadron was in Dno until 1943 and arrived at Jürgenfelde in September 1943 to fly the Ju-188. Then in December 1943 it was moved to Riga-Spilve, in October 1944 to Powunden and in December 1944 to Zabeln (Sabile) in Latvia................
