Jagdgruppen 1939/40.

Post by tigre »

Hello all :D; a new topic to share and discuss .....................

The Bf-109 D / E "Zerstörer" 1939 and 1940.

Despite the intention to outfit all the heavy fighters groups (destroyers) with airplanes Bf-110 B/C, at the beginning of hostilities only received such type of aircrafts the following units:

I. (Z)/ LG 1; I. /ZG 1 and I. /ZG 76.

The other groups maintained their Bf-109 D/E aircrafts, receiving from September 21, 1939, temporarily the appointment of JGr 101 (II. / ZG 1); JGr 102 (I. / ZG 2); JGr 126 (III / ZG 26). JGr 152 (I. / ZG 52) and JGr 176 (II. / ZG 76).

JGr 176.

Established as III./ JG 334 on July 01, 1938 with just one staffel; by Aug 01, 1938 got its HQ and two other staffeln. The gruppe was under Hauptmann Walter Schmidt-Coste and was converted to Bf-109D before the end of the month. On Nov 01, 1938 it was detachhed from JG 334 as I./ ZG 144 later became the II./ ZG 76. It was re-designated as Jagdgruppe 176 in autumn (when the sharkmouth first appears) then redesignated again a few months later as II./ZG76 in October- which later became famous for their sharkmouth Bf-110C/D.

The only success recorded for this gruppe was on Nov 10, 1939 when Oblt. Wilhelm Hobein downed an aerial balloon.

Are out there any other photos/data of this group? What happens with Hauptmann Walter Schmidt-Coste? Cheers. Raúl M 8).

The Bf-109 D / E "Zerstörer" 1939 and 1940.

The JGr 126.

On April 20, 1935 (Hitler's birthday) the Chief of Staff of the SA, Viktor Lutze, gave to Hitler an aircraft for a fighter squadron as "military gift of the SA". This was the beginning of the Jagdgeschwader 134, known as Jagdgeschwader 134 “Horst Wessel" from March 24, 1936. Later the name was changed being Zerstörergeschwader 142 “Horst Wessel" and finally on May 1, 1939 it was changed again by Zerstörergeschwader 26 "Horst Wessel", as it moved into the Second World War.

The Geschwader HQ and the I. Group were in Dortmund, the II. Group in Werl and The III. Group in Lippstadt. The Unit was within the framework of the Luftflotte 2. It was equipped with the Bf 109 D and shortly before the outbreak of war was converted to the Bf 110 (less the II./ ZG 26).

The Bf-109 D / E "Zerstörer" 1939 and 1940.

The JGr 101.

Origen - 1938/1939.

Originally organized in Straubing on July 1, 1938 as the II. / JG 135 under the command of Major Rudolf Stoltenhoff. On November 1, 1938 it was renamed as I. / JG 333 based in Herzogenaurach. On May 1, 1939 was designated as I. / JG 54 and on May 12 it was transferred to Fürstenwalde under Major Hellmuth Reichardt.

The II. Group of the Zerstörergeschwader 1 was born on May 15, 1939 in Fürstenwalde by renaming the I. / JG 54 with a Staff and 4. Staffel, 5. Staffel and 6. Staffel. At this time the Group was still equipped with the Messerschmitt Bf-109 D-1. As of August 1939, the Group was re-equipped with the Messerschmitt Bf-109 E-2 and E-3 because there were not enough Messerschmitt Bf-110 available at that time. In the course of the mobilization, the Group was placed under the Jagdgeschwader 2 on August 23, 1939. At the same time, the Group moved to Frankfurt an der Oder.

At the end of August 1939, the Group moved, in the course of mobilization, to Biblis. From there, the unit flew missions in order to protect the German western border. On September 24, 1939, due to lack of equipment the Group did not receive the Bf-110C heavy fighters yet, therefore it was renamed as Jagdgruppe 152. At that time its OoB was as follows:

This group did not take part in the actions in Poland and continued securing the borders of the Reich in the Saarland area. The first victory credited to the group took place on September 8, 1939 when Hptm. Wilhelm Lessmann knocked down a French Potez 63 (other sources said a Bloch MB 200) west of Landau. Later on September 16, 1939 Leutnant Hartmann Grasser of the 3./JGr. 152 shot down a French observation balloon.

On September 20, 1939 the group got two more victories, being the victors the Group Commander, Hauptmann Wilhelm Lessmann (one Fairey Battle) and Oberleutnant Dietrich v. Bothmer (one Bloch MB 200) west of Saarbrücken. On September 24, 1939 the group was credited with four kills (all Morane 406) west of Saarbrücken; two of them on account of Leutnant Kurt Rosenkranz and two on behalf of Leutnant Hartmann Grasser and Leutnant Horst Elstermann.
