Sanitätsflugbreitschaften.

Hello to all :D; another interesting topic..............................

Aerial evacuation service.

Before the war the firm Bayer had an airplane Ju -52 with four stretchers and the ability to transport medical personnel and medical supplies as a sanitary aircraft. This aircraft could be used in disaster situations or as a liaison airplane. The aircraft was identified with the enrollment D- AOHU and was painted in white with red crosses as identification. During the mobilization in August 1939 it was incorporated into the Luftwaffe and was the prototype for the sanitary aircrafts. During the Polish campaign it conducted several missions, even under fire.

The first services of this type were already in place before the war in the respective aerial regions commands (Luftgaukommandos). During the Invasion of Poland operated two elements of aerial evacuation, the No. 7 and the No. 11. The Sanitätsflugbereitschaft 7 was organized in early 1939 in Stendal and the Sanitätsflugbereitschaft 11 was organized in late August 1939, being stationed at Staaken.

In March 1940 was organized the No. 2 (Posen) as Sanitätsflugbereitschaft/X. Fliegerkorps which operated during Weserübung. Later, even before the start of Operation Barbarossa six elements were organized: No. 1 ( Königsberg - Devau ) , No. 3 (Berlin- Staaken ) , No. 4 ( Dresden) , No. 6 ( Münster- Loddenheide ) , No. 8 ( Breslau - Gandau ) and No. 17 ( Wien- Aspern ) . After the war there were a total of 11 units of air evacuation.

Aerial evacuation service.

Shortly after the opening of the hostilities, a modification in the structure of the medical aircrafts made possible the use of the new stretcher Model 34 and the field support Model 37. Using standardized procedures also succeeded in reducing the problem of the loading / unloading of the injured and the consequent trauma for them, at the end of the Polish campaign, a trained medical team could upload / download (since the cargo door is opened) a plane with eight seriously wounded and two slightly injured in 8-15 minutes. Collecting Points for wounded personnel were also established at the aerodromes with capacity of up to 50 beds.

With the experiences in Norway, the Ju-52 were adapted and modified according to circumstances. The transport capacity was increased from eight to twelve; the cabin got a cover with washable paint and was heated, even at low temperatures and the oxygen provison circuits were modified so that each stretcher had its mask. The center aisle offered enough space for the treatment of patients during the flight; to the rear near the medical personnel compartment , the plane had the capacity to carry four sitting patients. In this compartment there was a place for the disposal of the used sanitary material. During the flight could be performed dressing changes, intravenous injections and the application of intravenous fluids.

The medical staff of the Luftwaffe worked closely with physicians of the Heer and the Kriegsmarine in determining priorities for the evacuation, although this could also be determined by the chief of the air evacuation unit on the scene, depending on weather conditions, threats, geographical location and medical emergency.

Hello to all :D; more follows..............................

Aerial evacuation service.

The service had assigned not only Ju -52 , but also Fi -156 aircrafts. The total strenght of the group varied, depending on the situation, between 29 and 140 counting flying crews and technicians, orderlies, ambulance drivers, medical personnel and other support functions. The unit had up to 12 ambulances, used for transporting the wounded between the aerodrome and the hospitals; besides the medical staff also were attached Red Cross nurses who accompanied the wounded not only in sanitary planes but on regular flights also. Since 1941 the medical flights suffered constant threats so the Ju -52 had an MG 15 ( 7.9 mm ) machine gun for self-defense in the station at the top of the fuselage. Many times it was not possible to select the flight altitude under the conditions of the patients. As a general rule the flight heights ranging between 250 and 500 meters, flight heights above 1,000 meters were rare and were due to the geographical situation (terrain more than anything) . During the Polish campaign was found that could be considered safe a flight altitude up to 1,300 meters. Over the sea the flight heights were considerably lower.

Contraindications for air evacuation.

Contraindications to airlift seriously injured were rare and practically zero for minor injuries. Were excluded from the air evacuation dying patients and those wounded who had no chance of surviving, patients in shock or those that were not properly dressed on the ground. Initially were also excluded patients with anemia and heart disorders. Injuries of the lung and pleura with Bleeding and bruising, shortness of breath; abdominal injuries with prolapse and bleeding risk; patients with improper transport associations; intestinal infections.

Aerial evacuation service.

The desirable procedure to require an air evacuation, written by one of the leaders of the aerial units, was as follows :

1. Requirement of the aircraft through an army medical unit, specifying the number of serious and minor wounded to be transported.

2. Tasking Order to the aerial evacuation unit with the estimated of wounded to be transported through the chain of command of the Luftwaffe.

3. Takeoff of the aircraft and landing in the nearest airfield or area recognized nearby the location specified.

4. Message with the estimated time of arrival to the aerodrome of destination.

5. Confirming to the sanitary service of the army or the Luftwaffe about the landing, by telephone, messengers or by dropping a note when flying over the field hospital.

6. Transportation of the wounded by means of ambulance belonging to the army or the Luftwaffe.

7. Loading the wounded and return flight.

8. Landing and unloading of the wounded personnel in the airfield of origin and transport them by Luftwaffe's ambulance to the hospital.
