Hans Rudel's air to air kills

Post by Spandau »

Ave,

Hans Rudel had 16 kills I believe... were any of these shot down from his Stuka? I would imagine that he would have made these kills while flying his FW.

You are right, Rudel had 11 kills with his Focke-Wulf 190. With His Stuka, he became the most highly decorated Combat Aviator of all time.

How is "Rudel" pronounced?

Roo-DELL?

Rood'l?

Rudd'l?

I've never heard it spoken in conversation; that's why I'm asking.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

OK; thanks. I'd always puzzled over this.

I was always under the impression Rudel shot 7 planes down in the Stuka.
Only he is lost who gives himself up as lost.

I read his book many, many years ago. I do recall his rear-gunner shooting down some planes (don't remember how many), but I don't recall Rudel himself claiming any.

Around 400 of his sorties were flown in a Focke-Wulf 190 fighter plane (credit with 11 air victories).

From the web site Achtung Panzer.

I've seen a disperity of information on this subject. Some have said he had 11 air-to-air victories in his Stuka (must have been quite an accomplishment, that), some claim 11 victories in his Focke-Wulf, some claim 9 victories but don't mention what aircraft they were accomplished in, and so forth.

I'm more prone to believe the 11 victories (7 fighters and 2 IL-2's, at least) but then again who knows how many of these were shot down by his gunner - IF they were taken in the Stuka.

I haven't read "Stuka Pilot" in about fifteen years, and have been trying to buy a copy on eBay recently in order to get back up to speed on this amazing character.

The total of kills of Rudel is more likely to be 9, at ist one of them (1 il-2) was shot down using the 37 mm flak 18 while flying the Ju-87G.

The others 8 was shot down in the misions that he flew FW-190 versions.

His gunners also claimed 3 russian fighters destroyed, wich sometimes are imposed to Rudel .

So. Let me get this straigt. If your gunner in the rear (of your Stuka) shot down a enemy plane, the air victory was awarded to the pilot. That' s not fair - but it is practical

Hello gentlemen,

Rudel did not shot down a single enemy plane during his wartime service. It is amazing how, 60 years after the end of the war, many well-researched people still dance to the music of Germany's wartime propaganda. :?

Hi. Don't bother. Rudel's "book" is not even worth the paper it is printed on. :(

Hello Corderex!

I agree with you that there still are quite many wartime "legends"/propaganda myths around in history books and so on. But what are your sources for claiming that...
Rudel did not shot down a single enemy plane during his wartime service.
