Anyone know the function of "Armierungssoldat" =reinforcing soldier (circa WWI)?

Some sort of engineer troops, specialized in shelters and roads. Sometimes engaged into some battle action, but normally not as they were often not 100%-fit men.

Follow-up units to the 1917style Stormtroopers, the men who would occupy captured trenches etc. while the heavily-armed assault troops would keep driving on.
