Perhaps it should viewed as a battle that never should have been fought - Guderian was right. Better to have husbanded & built up the Panzer Division reserves to resist the coming Soviet offensive that everyone knew was inevitable. Even Hitler had his doubts, but once he made a decision, he loathed to walk it back. Viewed in retrospect, it had little, if any, chances of success and even if the Germans had cracked the Soviet 2nd Defensive Belt, overcame the Front reserves, and advanced on Kursk, they had no operational reserves of any consequence to exploit such a limited victory. And quite a few German commanders at the time had their doubts that it would succeed as well. But you're correct - Herr Nipe deals with Kursk in the south - i.e., Heeresgruppe Sued's sector & an in-depth study that examines both the southern & northern offensives from the German operational perspective has yet to be written but again, Glantz and House come pretty damned close, though they primarily look at it from the Soviet operational perspective.

Totally agree that mobile defense was the way to go. Even if the Germans had chopped off the whole Kursk salient and even with a third of the casualties, where were they expecting to go? No fuel.

I can't understand that after the Germans had underestimated the Soviet reserves both in 1941 & 1942, they thought they would get it right in 1943. Plus there was the fuel shortage that plagued the entire 1942 drive. Did they tap new oil wells in Bavaria in Spring '43? :D

And the magnitude of the shellacking the Russians dished out immediately after Kursk...yes the Germans were weakened, but the Soviets were even more so...makes me wonder how anyone can think anything positive could have come out of Citadel for the Germans. Maybe I'm missing something; willing to learn though.

It was delayed until August due to the incorporation of a number of new photographs, which necessitated some modifications to the layout of the manuscript. Nothing major, just time consuming for RZM and their graphics specialist. Again, August is the projected new release date.
Cheers,

I emailed RZM and their response was -

"Blood Steel Myth will be going to the printer this month and be released in September. The Arnheim book will be in the winter"

So some good news at last

Hi,
Stone&stone books just quote the following message from their website:
Author George Nipe sends welcome word about his upcoming book:

"My book Blood, Steel and Myth will be sent off to the printers this week. There is a four to five week turnaround, so it should be available in mid-October from RZM/Casemate."

From over five years ago, runs through several "Kursk myths" and says what was actually going on. Interestingly, also rebuts Nipes' claim that XIV Panzer Corps could have won a victory for the Germans had not Hitler's will (supposedly) failed.
